Example

No amount of "try to remember" fixes a prospective-memory slip like this. The fix is environmental: the night before, the empty return-bag is dropped on the driver's seat. The unavoidable act of getting in and buckling up the next morning surfaces the intention at precisely the right place and time. The cue works not because it is clever but because it sits in the path of the retrieval action and is salient in a modality — a bag where you're about to sit — that is impossible to ignore.

How it works

You locate the retrieval moment, then choose a feature that is reliably present then, salient in a modality the person can't miss, and uniquely bound to the target rather than a generic "remember something" nudge. You place it directly in the path of the action and guard it against habituation. What distinguishes this from simply providing information is that the cue carries no content — it only triggers internally-held recall — and it embodies the external-cue branch of the alignment strategy, chosen when reinstating or drilling won't reach the moment of need.

Tuning parameters

  • Salience and modality — visual, tactile, or auditory, matched to the person and setting so the cue is perceivable and beats inattention.
  • Placement — how directly in the path of the retrieval action it sits — on the seat you must use, not a shelf you might glance at.
  • Specificity — a cue uniquely tied to this target versus a generic reminder that could mean anything and so triggers nothing.
  • Habituation resistance — how often it is rotated or refreshed so it doesn't fade into background wallpaper.
  • Persistence — a permanent cue versus a self-clearing one removed once the action is done, so its presence stays meaningful.

When it helps, and when it misleads

The cue shines for prospective memory — remembering to do something later — and for well-learned content that only needs triggering at the right instant; it is cheap, robust, and requires nothing of the moment but attention.[n1] It misleads through cue overload (so many cues that none is salient) and habituation (a fixed cue the eye stops seeing). The classic misuse is relying on a cue the real environment won't reliably contain, or one so generic it triggers nothing at all.
