Excluded Case Review¶
Test / assessment — instantiates Grand Narrative Decomposition
Collects cases that the narrative omits or treats as exceptions, then tests whether they are irrelevant, boundary-setting, or narrative-breaking.
An Excluded Case Review works entirely on what a story left out. It gathers the cases the narrative omits or waves away as exceptions into an explicit register, then puts each one on trial with a fixed verdict set: is this excluded case irrelevant (rightly outside), boundary-setting (it marks where the story stops holding), qualifying (it forces a "usually, not always"), or narrative-breaking (it contradicts a load-bearing claim)? Its defining move is adjudicating the omissions rather than the inclusions: it neither re-checks the evidence the story already shows nor builds a rival account — it makes the story's silences speak and grades what they say.
Example¶
A conservation narrative holds that "introduced species always harm native ecosystems." The review ignores the many cases that fit and hunts the ones the story steps around: introductions that turned out neutral, or that unexpectedly supported a declining native — for instance non-native tamarisk stands used for nesting by an endangered flycatcher after native cottonwoods thinned. Each excluded case enters the register and is graded. A pest that arrived benign but later devastated crops is irrelevant to the harm claim (it confirms it, delayed). A case where harm depended entirely on ecosystem type is boundary-setting: the claim holds in some systems, not all. A documented net-beneficial introduction is qualifying or, if it strikes a core "always," narrative-breaking.
The outcome converts an absolute into a bounded claim: "always harmful" becomes "frequently harmful, conditional on ecosystem and time horizon," with the specific pressure-point cases named. The story survives, smaller and truer.
How it works¶
- Read the silences. Using the story's own selected-evidence record, list what falls outside it — omitted actors, regions, periods, failed paths, dissenters, and dismissed exceptions.
- Register each case. Enter them explicitly rather than leaving them as vague "exceptions," so the exclusion becomes reviewable.
- Apply the four-way test. Grade each as irrelevant, boundary-setting, qualifying, or narrative-breaking against a specific claim.
- Name the pressure points. Elevate the cases that press hardest on a load-bearing claim; these are what a revision must answer.
Tuning parameters¶
- Search aggressiveness — how hard to hunt for omitted cases. Harder search finds real boundary cases but costs time and can surface trivia.
- Verdict threshold — how strong a case must be to count as narrative-breaking rather than merely qualifying. A low bar overturns stories on thin cases; a high bar lets real breaks pass as footnotes.
- Case weighting — whether all excluded cases count equally or by how load-bearing the claim they hit is. Weighting focuses effort but embeds a judgment about which claims matter.
- Stopping rule — when enough cases have been graded to draw a boundary. Stopping early risks a false "no exceptions"; never stopping is analysis paralysis.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is turning a story's blind spots into a map of its real edges: exclusions stop being silent and become a graded list of where a claim holds, bends, and breaks. It is the standing corrective to survivorship bias[n1] — the habit of theorizing only from the cases that made it into view. Its failure mode is anomaly overweighting: one vivid excluded case is treated as demolishing the whole narrative, when the four-way test exists precisely to ask whether it is irrelevant, a boundary, a qualifier, or a genuine break. The misuse is the gotcha counter-example wielded without classification. The guarding discipline is to force every excluded case through the verdict set and to keep asking "which claim, exactly, does this break?"
How it implements the components¶
Excluded Case Review fills the omission-and-anomaly parts of the archetype — the ones about what the story does not show:

It does not assemble the alternative_narrative_set — that is counter_narrative_comparison, which builds rival accounts rather than grading a single story's omissions; and it does not audit the selected_evidence_record or write the decomposition_summary — those belong to metanarrative_audit, which reviews the evidence a story includes and renders the overall verdict.

The classic illustration is Abraham Wald's WWII analysis of returning aircraft: the planes that did not return carried the information about where armor was truly needed.
