Exposure Accumulation Map¶
Concentration artifact — instantiates Correlation Structure Analysis for Pooling Effectiveness
Maps concentration in geography, technology, supplier, factor, or shock source by tallying total pooled exposure behind each shared feature until hidden single points surface.
An Exposure Accumulation Map is the artifact that answers "if this one thing goes wrong, how much of the pool goes with it?" It inventories every pooled exposure together with the features that could couple it to others — where it sits, what it runs on, who supplies it, which factor it loads on — and then tallies the total exposure behind each shared feature. Its defining move is accumulation: not listing members, but summing exposure along each axis of commonality until the hidden concentrations surface — the single fab, the single flood plain, the single cloud region that silently backs a quarter of a pool that looked broad by count. It is a descriptive picture, not a limit and not a statistic: it shows where exposure piles up, and stops there.
Example¶
A hardware company sources components from 30 suppliers and treats that as a diversified supply base. The Exposure Accumulation Map lists each supplier with its coupling attributes — fab location, foundry, substrate source, logistics port, sole-source status — then tallies exposure along each axis. Grouped by foundry, a pattern jumps out: 18 of the 30 suppliers, and roughly 70% of unit volume, ultimately fabricate at a single foundry in one industrial park. Grouped by port, most inbound freight funnels through one strait. The 30-supplier "diversification," measured against a fab outage or a port closure, is closer to one or two independent exposures. The map is the picture that makes that legible before a disruption proves it, and it does so purely by summing — no model, no forecast, just the accumulation laid bare.
How it works¶
- Inventory the exposures with coupling attributes. Every pooled unit, each tagged with the features that could tie it to others.
- Define the accumulation axes. The dimensions of commonality — geography, technology or platform, supplier, market factor, shock source.
- Sum exposure per bucket. For each value on each axis, add up the total pooled exposure that rides on it.
- Rank the peaks. Surface the buckets holding the most concentrated exposure — the map's payload.
Tuning parameters¶
- Axis set — which dimensions of commonality you tally along; a coupling on an axis you never drew cannot accumulate.
- Granularity — coarse (country) versus fine (industrial park); fine granularity catches the real coupling, coarse granularity hides it inside a big bucket.
- Exposure unit — member count, insured value, or contribution-to-loss; counting members understates a concentration carried by a few large exposures.
- Tiering depth — first-tier relationships only, or tracing to upstream sole sources; the strongest surprises usually hide one or two tiers up.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is turning "we have many" into "here is exactly where many collapse to one," cheaply and visually, before any event forces the lesson.
Its weakness is that a map is only as deep as its tracing. A concentration one tier up — a shared upstream input that every "different" supplier quietly draws on — is invisible unless you follow the chain, and axes you did not think to tally simply do not appear.[1] The classic misuse is mapping members without their upstream couplings and then declaring the pool broad because the top-level list is long. The discipline is to trace to the real single points of failure rather than stopping at the first tier, and to revisit the map as the pool's composition shifts, since a fresh consolidation can re-concentrate a base that was once genuinely spread.
How it implements the components¶
pooled_exposure_inventory— the map's base layer is this inventory: every pooled unit recorded with the dependence-relevant features, not just its name.dependence_source_map— the accumulation axes are the shared drivers, and the per-bucket tally is the mapping of each exposure onto them.
It measures accumulation but sets no limit on it (concentration_and_cap_rule, redesign_or_risk_transfer_response — Pool Concentration Cap, the twin that acts on what the map reveals). It fits no dependence model (tail_dependence_check — Copula Tail-Dependence Check) and computes no pooling gain (pooling_gain_estimator — Diversification Ratio Calculation).

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Analysis, Modeling & Optimization
Rationale: Exposure Accumulation Map operates as a computation, comparison, model, or analytic representation used to infer, estimate, or choose because it maps concentration in geography, technology, supplier, factor, or shock source by tallying total pooled exposure behind each shared feature until hidden single points surface.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Exposure Accumulation Map as 'Maps concentration in geography, technology, supplier, factor, or shock source by tallying total pooled exposure behind each shared feature until hidden single points surface', so its operative form is Analysis, Modeling & Optimization.
Nearest alternative: Representation, Specification & Plan — Summing exposure across shared features produces ranked concentration inferences, while the map externalizes the result.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Economics & Finance
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Aggregating exposures by correlated factor, geography, supplier, or shock source derives from portfolio and concentration-risk management.
Related originating lineages:
- Disaster Management & Risk Reduction — Hazard mapping materially contributes geographic accumulation and single-point vulnerability views.
- Logistics & Supply Chain Management — Supplier and infrastructure concentration mapping materially extends the method to operational dependencies.
Review resolution: Both reviewers agree that economics_finance is primary. I retain disaster_management, logistics_supply_chain only as formative origin lineages; cross_disciplinary_synthesis is appropriate because the final form materially combines the agreed primary with the retained formative lineages. Reach is multi_domain because the structure transfers across several fields but is not a near-universal human pattern, an applicability judgment kept separate from provenance. Encyclopedia synthesis is true because the exact generalized artifact is an encyclopedia-authored combination or refinement. No unresolved historical ambiguity remains after reconciling the secondary fields.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.
