Feedforward Action Rehearsal¶
Rehearsal method — instantiates Knowing-Doing Bridge Design
Runs the target action ahead of time under realistic conditions — as a drill or simulation — so the doing is already practiced before the real moment arrives.
Feedforward Action Rehearsal closes the knowing-doing gap by having the actor perform the action in advance — in a drill, a simulation, or a walkthrough that recreates the real conditions — before the real moment ever arrives. Its defining move is that it converts declarative knowledge into practiced motor and decision routine ahead of the event, so that when the cue fires the response is already grooved rather than being assembled on the spot under load. It is anticipatory: the name feedforward is deliberate, contrasting with feedback, which corrects after the fact. Rehearsal spends effort before the action to buy capacity during it — the difference between someone who has read the emergency procedure and someone whose hands have already done it a dozen times.
Example¶
Airline pilots all know the memory items for an engine failure on takeoff; the knowledge is on the checklist and in the manual. But a real failure arrives in seconds, at the worst possible phase of flight, under adrenaline — exactly when read-it-once knowledge dissolves. So the action is rehearsed in a full-motion simulator: the engine fails at V1, the flight deck fills with alarms, and the crew flies the failure again and again until the pitch attitude, the rudder input, the callouts, and the division of labor between pilots run without deliberation. Nothing about the knowledge was missing beforehand. What the simulator builds is the practiced capacity to execute it when there is no time to think — so that on the rare real day, the doing has already happened, dozens of times, in a place where mistakes cost nothing.[n1]
How it works¶
- Recreate the real conditions. Rehearse under the load, time pressure, tools, and setting of the actual moment — not a calm classroom version. The friction that defeats live action must be present in the drill or the drill doesn't inoculate against it.
- Perform, don't discuss. The actor physically or mentally executes the action, not merely talks through it; the value is in laying down the routine, which requires doing.
- Repeat to fluency. Run it enough times that the response is retrievable without deliberation and stable under stress.
- Debrief forward. After each run, note where execution faltered and adjust the next rep — the rehearsal improves the doing, not just confidence in it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Fidelity — how closely the rehearsal matches real conditions, from a tabletop talk-through to a full high-fidelity simulation. Higher fidelity transfers better and costs far more.
- Repetition count — one walkthrough versus drilling to automaticity. More reps build stress-proof fluency but consume time and can breed rote complacency.
- Stressor loading — how much of the real pressure (time, noise, distraction, stakes) is injected. Load makes rehearsal transfer to hard moments but can overwhelm a novice.
- Scenario variety — rehearsing the one expected case versus a spread of variants. Variety builds adaptable capacity; a single script can produce brittle over-fitting.
- Recency cadence — how long before the real event the rehearsal happens and how often it is refreshed. Rehearsed skill decays, so timing matters as much as amount.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the only bridge that directly builds capacity to execute under real conditions — it is what you reach for when the action is skilled, time-critical, or emotionally loaded and no amount of convenience or reminding will substitute for having done it before. It also surfaces hidden execution gaps safely, in a place where failing is free.
Its failure mode is low-fidelity rehearsal that breeds false confidence: a calm, unhurried walkthrough can leave people sure they can act while having practiced nothing resembling the real moment, so the skill collapses precisely when it is needed. The classic misuse is the box-checking annual drill run so gently it certifies readiness that isn't there. Rehearsal can also over-fit — drilling one scripted scenario until the actor executes it flawlessly and freezes when reality differs. The guarding discipline is to rehearse under realistic load and enough variation that the capacity built is robust, and to treat the drill's stumbles, not its smooth reps, as the real output.
How it implements the components¶
Feedforward Action Rehearsal fills the build-the-capacity-in-advance side of the bridge:
