Figure-Ground Reversal¶
Design method — instantiates Ambiguity-Exploitation in Visual Metaphor
Designs a boundary so the region taken as background can flip to foreground, giving one contour two readings that trade places as the eye reassigns figure and ground.
Figure-Ground Reversal exploits the single perceptual decision every image forces — which region is the figure (the thing) and which is the ground (behind it). By shaping one shared boundary so that either side can be read as the subject, it gives a single contour two meanings that swap as the eye reassigns them: the space between two profiles becomes a vase, the gap between two letters becomes an arrow. Its defining move is that the two readings compete for the same edge — you cannot see both as figure at once, and the metaphor is carried by the tension of that trade. Unlike a Double-Image Composition, where two pictures share the whole positive field, here the second reading lives specifically in what you were treating as empty.
Example¶
A museum of migration commissions a directional sign for its main hall. The designer shapes a bold silhouette of two facing human profiles; the gap between them is contoured into the outline of a bridge, and an arrow rides its span. A visitor first reads two faces turned toward each other, then the "between" snaps forward as a bridge pointing the way — and the sign has quietly said connection across a divide while doing its literal wayfinding job. The reversal is tuned so the faces and the bridge are each clean, closed shapes; if the gap were ragged, the bridge would never resolve, and if the profiles were fussy, the eye would never release them to see it. Both readings are engineered into one edge.
How it works¶
The method designs one boundary to serve two shapes. The designer draws the intended figure, then treats its surrounding space as a second shape to be sculpted, adjusting the shared edge until both the positive and the "negative" region are each a coherent, nameable form. Cues that normally fix figure-ground — enclosure, size, contrast, convexity — are balanced so neither region wins outright, holding the flip alive. The two readings are chosen so their swap means something (self and other, presence and absence). The whole effect rides on a boundary that is legible in both directions.
Tuning parameters¶
- Figure-ground balance — how evenly the cues (size, contrast, enclosure) are split. Even balance sustains the flip; tilting them makes one reading primary and the other a reveal.
- Boundary complexity — how much the shared edge must describe. A simple edge flips easily but says little; an ambitious edge that must render two detailed shapes risks resolving into neither.
- Contrast polarity — which region is dark and which light. Swapping polarity changes which reading the eye defaults to and can invert the metaphor's emphasis.
- Closure of the ground shape — how completely the "empty" region reads as a closed form. More closure makes the second reading pop; less keeps it subliminal.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Reversal is ideal for metaphors of duality, boundary, and mutual definition — two things that define each other by their shared edge — and it is prized in logos and signage because one economical shape delivers two meanings. It rewards the Gestalt fact that figure and ground are assigned, not given.[1]
It misleads when one reading is far stronger than the other: the eye locks onto the dominant figure and the second shape becomes invisible, so the metaphor is lost on most viewers. It can also be too balanced, producing restless flicker with no resting meaning. The classic misuse is chasing a clever reversal whose two shapes have no conceptual link, leaving an empty trick. The discipline is to verify that the ground reading is actually found by fresh eyes and that the flip carries the intended relation, not just visual wit.
How it implements the components¶

It carries meaning in the reassigned edge, not in a discrete hidden shape tucked inside empty space — that's Negative-Space Reveal — and it supplies no verbal anchor or reading-test, which belong to Title-Anchored Open Reading and Interpretation Probe.

Figure-Ground Reversal and Negative-Space Reveal both mine the "empty" region, but they differ in kind: reversal makes the whole image bistable so foreground and background trade places, while negative-space reveal hides one extra shape in an otherwise stable ground.
