Fluency-Response A/B Test¶
Controlled experiment — instantiates Fluency-Based Preference Exploitation
Compares an exposed group against an unexposed control to measure whether growing familiarity is actually moving preference — and by how much.
Belief that exposure is working is cheap; evidence that it is working requires a control. Fluency-Response A/B Test randomizes people into an exposed arm and an unexposed one, holds the target identical, and reads out the difference — measuring whether accumulating familiarity actually shifts recognition, liking, and intent, and how large that shift is. Its defining element is the counterfamiliarity control: an arm that never sees the target, so any preference gap between the arms is attributable to exposure rather than to the target's intrinsic appeal or to everything else moving at once. It measures the fluency-to-preference effect; it does not decide the cap or disclose the effect to the audience.
Example¶
A museum is testing a new visual motif for its membership campaign before committing to it. It runs an A/B test. A randomly assigned exposed group encounters the motif across a month of newsletters and web pages; a matched control group never sees it at all. At the end, both groups rate recognition, liking, and stated intent to renew — and the readout is split by prior attitude, separating existing members (positive priors) from lapsed or never-members (neutral-to-negative priors). The control arm anchors the comparison: whatever the exposed group feels above the control is the motif's exposure effect, not its standalone charm. The finding is specific — the motif lifts liking among neutral-prior prospects but does nothing for lapsed members — which tells the museum the motif helps recruit but will not win back, a distinction a single exposed group could never have revealed.
How it works¶
Its distinguishing work is isolating the exposure effect through a control arm, not delivering or bounding exposure:
- Randomize exposed versus control. Assign people to see the target or not, so the arms differ only in exposure.
- Hold the target constant. Keep identity and content identical across arms, so the test reads familiarity and not a content change.
- Separate the outcomes. Measure recognition, liking, recall, and intent as distinct read-outs rather than collapsing them into one score.
- Segment by prior attitude. Split results by prior disposition to catch positive lift in one segment and reversal in another.
Tuning parameters¶
- Control design — a pure no-exposure arm versus exposure to a novel decoy. A decoy control isolates familiarity from mere presence but costs a third arm.
- Outcome separation — how finely recognition, liking, recall, and intent are measured apart. Finer separation catches familiarity that outran quality but adds instrument burden.
- Segmentation depth — how many prior-attitude strata. More strata reveal reversal in hostile segments but shrink each cell's sample.
- Exposure horizon — how long the test runs before readout. Longer captures durable effects but risks control contamination and novelty decay.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is telling a real fluency-to-preference lift apart from noise and from a one-off novelty effect[n1] — the transient spike that comes from newness rather than familiarity — and it can surface the negative-exposure reversal in hostile segments before a full rollout commits to it.
Its failure mode is misreading a novelty spike as durable familiarity, or letting control subjects encounter the target anyway so the arms blur. The classic misuse is reporting a liking lift as though it were a gain in quality or truth: the test measures whether preference moved, not whether the target got better, and treating the two as the same launders familiarity into a claim it cannot support. The guarding discipline is to keep the control clean, run long enough to separate novelty from fluency, and label every outcome as a preference effect rather than evidence of merit.

It does not enforce the exposure ceiling once wearout appears (saturation_and_reactance_guard) — that is Exposure Frequency Cap; the cap acts on the response to stop exposure, while this test only quantifies it. Nor does it tell the audience that familiarity is not proof (ethical_transparency_notice) — that is its nearest twin Familiarity-Bias Disclosure Prompt, which discloses the effect where this test measures it.
