A game day is a scheduled event in which a real, substantial failure is deliberately triggered on — or very near — the production system, and the full response unfolds for real: people paged, runbooks opened, tools used, decisions made under live conditions. Example

A chemical plant holds a semi-annual game day. With the site running normally, the shift supervisor is handed a scripted-but-live scenario: a cooling-water pump has "failed" and is physically valved out of service. From that moment the response is real. Operators execute the emergency procedure on the actual boards, the incident commander stands up a real command post, and the drill runs until stable state is reached. Two things surface that no paper review had caught — a hand-off valve the procedure assumed was motorized is actually manual and forty feet up a gantry, and the newest control-room operator had never physically located the backup radio. Both are the kind of decayed detail a decade of calm buries, found here in a bounded drill instead of during a genuine loss of cooling.

How it works

  • Trigger a real, large failure. Inject an actual fault of consequence, on or beside production, not a described one — the response has to be performed, not narrated.
  • Run the whole response, live. Page real people, open real runbooks, use real tools; the point is the full chain under realistic conditions and time pressure.
  • Watch what the calm had hidden. The prize is the stale detail — the dead alarm, the moved equipment, the untrained hand — that only a live attempt exposes.
  • Contain by window, not by slice. Manage risk through timing, staffing, and a rehearsed abort rather than by shrinking the fault, because breadth is the whole point.

Tuning parameters

When it helps, and when it misleads
