Granularity Scale Ladder¶

Granularity Scale Ladder is a graded series that steps unit size and viewing distance to locate two thresholds bracketing where a texture actually reads as texture. Below the lower threshold, microvariation drops beneath perception and the surface goes flat; above the upper one, the variation stops reading as texture and hardens into a discrete macro-pattern or gross form. Its one idea is the perceptibility band — not whether a texture survives reproduction, and not how it responds to light, but the range of scales and distances at which it exists at all for the eye.
Example¶
An interior designer picks a subtle two-tone fleck for a hotel corridor carpet. Held in the hand, the fleck is lively and clearly legible. The ladder views the same fleck across its real range: rendered at intended tile size and observed at 0.5 m, 2 m, 5 m, and 8 m down the corridor. By 5 m the fleck dissolves into a flat gray — the intended richness is gone at exactly the distance guests will see most of it. Worse, when the team regularizes the fleck spacing to make it "tidier," the ladder shows it patterning up into faint visible rows at 3 m. The finding sets both dials: enlarge the fleck so it stays alive at corridor distance, and keep the placement irregular so it never resolves into stripes.
How it works¶
- Fix everything but scale. Vary only unit size and/or viewing distance so each rung isolates a perceptibility change.
- Step through the real range. Include the intended scale and the rungs on either side, at the distances the surface will actually be seen.
- Score three states per rung. Below perception, legible-as-texture, or risen into macro-pattern / gross form.
- Watch spacing tip the top. Note where regular spacing collapses grain into a visible pattern earlier than random placement would.
Tuning parameters¶
- Step granularity — coarse rungs find the band fast; fine rungs pin the exact threshold but take longer.
- Scale versus distance axis — stepping physical unit size, viewing distance, or both; both is more complete but a larger matrix.
- Spacing regularity — how ordered the placement is; regularity brings the macro-pattern threshold closer and is often the hidden failure.
- Intended-distance anchoring — where the band is centered; anchoring to the true primary viewing distance is what makes the result actionable.
- Perception criterion — whether "perceptible" means any observer or most; a stricter criterion narrows the usable band.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is pinning the disappear-and-emerge thresholds so a texture is specified for its actual viewing distance rather than for the hand — grounded in the eye's contrast-sensitivity limit[n1], which sets when fine variation simply cannot be resolved.
Its failure mode is laddering only a nominal distance instead of the real one, ignoring that regular spacing turns grain into pattern well before unit size alone would, or assuming a single observer's acuity stands in for everyone. The classic misuse is judging a large-format surface at reading distance and shipping a texture that is invisible where it lives. The guarding discipline is to anchor the ladder to genuine viewing distances and to run the regular-versus-irregular spacing variants so the macro-emergence threshold is not a surprise.
