Hermeneutic Loop Log

Iteration register for the interpretive loop — instantiates Context-Bounded Meaning Recovery

Keeps a running record of each pass through the part-and-whole loop — what the reading was, what the substrate forced you to revise, and how your own assumptions shifted — until the interpretation stabilizes or is escalated.

Interpretation is rarely a single pass: you read the parts to grasp the whole, then the whole changes how you read the parts, and around again. Hermeneutic Loop Log is not a reading but the record of that looping — each entry pairing the revised interpretation with (a) the part–whole tension that forced the revision and (b) the interpreter's own shifting assumptions along the way, all governed by a rule that says when to stop and when to escalate. Its defining feature is that it is temporal and reflexive where the other mechanisms are static: it does not warrant a claim or compare readings, it makes the process of arriving at a reading auditable, and it bounds that process so the loop terminates instead of spiraling or quietly confirming itself.

Example

A researcher is coding around thirty interviews about a workplace reorganization. Pass one: a code, distrust of management, seems to fit dozens of passages, and the log records it. Reading the whole corpus reshapes the parts — on a second pass, many of those "distrust" passages are really about unpredictable process, so the code splits, and the log records the revision and the tension that drove it. Then the reflexive entry: the researcher notes they had, at the outset, half-expected distrust because of a prior job, and that this fore-understanding had colored pass one — a projection now disclosed on the page rather than left silent.

By pass four the reading stops moving; the convergence criterion is met. On one contested transcript two passes disagree without settling, so the escalation rule fires and a second coder is brought in. The outcome is not just a set of codes but an auditable trail of how the reading was reached — every revision, and every stance-shift behind it, on the record.

How it works

The distinguishing move is to log the loop, not the conclusion. Each entry is a revision, and each revision is tied to two things: the part–whole tension that triggered it and the interpreter's own assumptions as they stood at that pass. A stop-or-escalate rule ends the loop — when the reading has stabilized, or when passes deadlock and the matter is handed up or out. What the log produces is an inspectable history of the interpretation and a guarantee that the looping does not run forever or fold back into self-confirmation.

Tuning parameters

  • Loop granularity — whether you log every micro-revision or only each major pass, trading completeness against noise.
  • Convergence criterion — how stable a reading must be across passes before the loop is allowed to stop.
  • Escalation trigger — what fires a hand-off — persistent non-convergence, flat contradiction, or high stakes — and to whom.
  • Reflexivity depth — how much of the interpreter's own standpoint each entry is required to record.
  • Audit orientation — a private aide-mémoire versus a shareable trail others can inspect and challenge.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is making an iterative reading auditable, catching projection by forcing stance-shifts onto the page, and bounding the loop so interpretation actually terminates.

Its characteristic failure is the circle turning vicious — each pass confirming the prior reading rather than testing it, so the log becomes a chronicle of a confirmation loop dressed as rigor.[1] The discipline that keeps it honest is that every entry must record what the substrate resisted, not only what it confirmed, and the escalation rule must be genuinely able to fire — a loop that can only ever converge on its starting reading was never a loop.

How it implements the components

  • revision_and_escalation_rule — the log's spine: every entry is a revision, and the stop-or-escalate rule governs when the looping ends and when it is handed up.
  • interpreter_position_disclosure — each pass records the interpreter's shifting fore-understanding, so projection is exposed as it happens rather than hidden in the result.

It does not warrant the evidence for any single claim (Evidence-to-Claim Matrix), lay out the slate of rival readings (Alternative Readings Review), or check the reading against stakeholders (Stakeholder Meaning Check); it records the iterative process those mechanisms run inside.

Notes

The log documents how a reading was reached, not whether it is right. A meticulously auditable trail can still arrive at a wrong reading, and a reading's validity has to be established elsewhere — against rivals in Alternative Readings Review or against stakeholders in Stakeholder Meaning Check. This mechanism secures process transparency; it does not certify the product.
