Provenance reconstruction — instantiates Latent Constraint Preservation Audit

Rebuilds the forgotten original rationale for a structure from records, change logs, and provenance — recovering why it was created rather than who remembers it.

Historical Rationale Reconstruction answers why does this exist? from the paper trail. It treats the structure as an archaeological object and excavates the record around its creation — the change that introduced it, the minutes that debated it, the incident that provoked it, the regulation that demanded it — to reconstruct the constraint it was built to satisfy. Its defining move is sourcing the rationale from artifacts, not memory: it works precisely when the people who knew are gone, and it produces a hypothesis grounded in dated, citable evidence rather than recollection. Alongside the hypothesis it reads the trail of persistence itself — every time the structure survived a reform, migration, or regime change — as its own kind of evidence about what the structure was quietly holding.

Example

A university registrar's office wants to eliminate a step requiring a physical wet-ink signature from a dean before any transcript is released to a third party. It is slow, it delays students, and everyone assumes it is bureaucratic residue. No current staffer knows why a dean must sign. Reconstruction goes to the record. The archived policy manual shows the step was added in a specific revision; the board minutes from that term reference "the disclosure incident"; a memo from the general counsel of the day ties the signature to a settlement following an improper release of student records under federal privacy law. The persistence trail confirms it: the step survived two office reorganizations and a full move to digital transcripts, each time re-adopted rather than dropped. The reconstruction does not rule on whether to keep the wet signature — it establishes that the step encodes a privacy-compliance authorization, not mere ceremony, so any redesign must carry that authorization forward in some form. What looked like residue turns out to be a scar.

How it works

  • Locate the introduction. Find the change that first created the structure — the commit, the policy revision, the regulation's effective date — to anchor the search in time.
  • Read the surrounding record. Pull minutes, memos, tickets, incident reports, and correspondence from that period for the stated or implied reason, and cite each source.
  • Reconstruct the constraint. Assemble the evidence into an explicit hypothesis of the original function, marked by how well-supported it is (documented, inferred, or merely plausible).
  • Read the persistence trail. Log each later event where the structure was reconsidered and kept; repeated deliberate re-adoption is stronger evidence than mere survival by inertia.

Tuning parameters

  • Archive reach — how far the search extends: the local system's history, or institutional archives, regulators, and external record-keepers. Wider reach recovers older rationale but costs time and access.
  • Evidence bar for the hypothesis — whether a rationale needs a direct documentary statement or can be inferred from context. A strict bar avoids inventing history; a loose bar salvages a hypothesis when records are thin but risks a plausible fiction.
  • Persistence-signal weight — how much survival-across-regimes counts as evidence of function versus mere inertia. Overweighting it re-mystifies every old thing; underweighting it ignores a real signal the archetype prizes.
  • Provenance depth — stopping at the first plausible reason versus tracing the full chain of amendments. Depth catches rationale that shifted over time (built for one reason, kept for another) at the cost of effort.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is recovering rationale that no living person holds — the reason encoded in a decade-old settlement or a long-departed engineer's commit message. It is the archetype's antidote to the "nobody knows why, so it must be useless" fallacy, because it can often show exactly why. The persistence trail it reads is a caution against the deeper trap: structures survive not only because they are useful but because systems get locked into them, so long survival must be interpreted, not just counted.[n1]

Its failure mode is the decayed or missing record: absence of a documented rationale is not absence of a rationale, and a reconstruction that finds nothing can be misread as proof the structure is purposeless when it only proves the archive is thin. It is also prone to provenance drift — the original reason may have lapsed while a newer, undocumented reason keeps the structure necessary, so a faithful history of the origin can miss the current function entirely. The classic misuse is treating "no record found" as a clearance to delete. The guarding discipline is to pair a thin or origin-only reconstruction with a living-memory source, and to state explicitly when the hypothesis is inferred rather than documented.

How it implements the components

  • persistence_evidence_signal — it reads the structure's survival across reorganizations, migrations, and reforms as interpretable evidence, distinguishing deliberate re-adoption from drift-by-inertia.

It does NOT implement dependency_and_stakeholder_register — that is its nearest twin, Legacy Function Interview's contribution: the interview harvests from living people who currently depends on the structure, which no archive can name. This mechanism recovers the documented past; the interview recovers the remembered present.
