Some mismatches are informational: something is known upstream and still invisible downstream, and for a brief window the knowing itself is tradeable. Information Arbitrage Workflow is the method that detects such a gap and acts on it — reroute, pre-buy, warn, prepare — before the information propagates into everyone else's behavior and the edge evaporates. Nothing physical moves and no form is translated; the asset is the timing of knowledge, and its two irreducible parts are a way to find the gap and a lawful source that reveals it first. That legality constraint is not decorative: an edge built on insider abuse, deception, or privacy invasion is a different and prohibited thing.

Example

A freight operator ingests public vessel-tracking (AIS) feeds, port-queue postings, and weather models, and watches for a specific mismatch: berth congestion building at a major port that the spot shipping market has not yet repriced. Days before rates spike, the signal appears — arrivals clustering, a storm narrowing a channel. The workflow acts inside that window, rerouting cargo to a less-congested port and locking capacity at pre-spike rates. The value is captured entirely from acting before the information is common — a week later the same public data is on everyone's screen and the advantage is gone. The workflow's whole craft is detecting the gap early and confirming the source is lawful and reliable before committing.

How it works

Two components carry it. Mismatch detection continuously scans for a divergence between what is knowable upstream and what downstream behavior (prices, routing, staffing) currently reflects — separating a real, actionable spread from noise and already-priced information. Information edge is the lawful, reliable source that surfaces the gap ahead of the crowd. The method then acts within the decay window; it does not itself move goods or clear the crossing legally.

Tuning parameters

  • Latency budget — how fast the workflow must act before the edge decays. A short half-life demands automation; a slow one tolerates human review.
  • Signal threshold — how much confidence is required before acting. A low bar catches more edges but acts on noise; a high bar is precise but late.
  • Source-legitimacy line — what sources are in bounds (public, licensed, self-generated) versus the hard stop at anything touching material non-public information or private data.
  • Scan breadth vs. depth — monitor many weak signals or a few instrumented deeply. Breadth finds more; depth confirms better.
  • Decay assumption — the estimated half-life of the edge, which sets how aggressively to size the move.

When it helps, and when it misleads

It shines where a genuine, lawful information lead exists and can be acted on inside its window. Its structural adversary is that markets reflect information: the efficient-market hypothesis is the reason edges decay, and the danger is discovering you were the last to know rather than the first.[n1] Two failures recur — acting on noise mistaken for signal, and, far worse, sliding from a lawful edge into insider abuse, deception, or privacy invasion, which crosses the line marked by material non-public information. The discipline is to verify both that the source is legitimate and that the information is not already priced in before committing a move.

Notes

This is the mechanism most often consumed by the others — many captures begin with an information edge — but its legitimacy boundary is non-negotiable and belongs to it, not to whoever acts on the signal. A lawful edge that is passed to a downstream capture stays lawful only if the source stayed clean.
