Infrastructure and Default Redesign¶
Sociotechnical design method — instantiates Agent–Environment Co-Shaping
Rebuilds the shared substrate and default settings people act within, so the behaviour you want becomes the path of least resistance instead of an act of willpower.
Most attempts to change behaviour argue with the person. Infrastructure and Default Redesign changes the substrate instead — the standing configuration, layout, and default settings that everyone starts from — so that the desired action is the one that happens when nobody is trying. Its defining move is to leave the choice formally intact while flipping which option is pre-selected and frictionless: the wiring, the form's pre-filled field, the paved walkway, the out-of-the-box setting. Where a sibling might change what a behaviour pays, this mechanism changes what a behaviour costs in effort, on the bet that a well-shaped default outlasts any amount of exhortation because the environment itself keeps reinstating it.
Example¶
A country wants more workers saving for retirement. Persuasion campaigns barely move the numbers. So instead of changing minds, it changes the default: new employees are automatically enrolled in the pension at a set contribution, and staying in requires doing nothing while leaving requires a deliberate opt-out. Participation jumps — not because anyone was convinced, but because the effortful path and the desired path swapped places. The choice is still there; what changed is the substrate everyone starts from. The redesign is aimed at a specific niche: a workforce in which saving is simply the ambient normal, self-sustaining because each cohort inherits it as "how things are here."
How it works¶
- Find the silent default. Every setting already has one; locate the standing configuration that is quietly producing today's behaviour.
- Re-lay the substrate. Make the desired option the pre-selected, frictionless one and let the alternatives carry (a little) more effort — without removing them.
- Leave the choice real. The lever is friction, not force; an inhabitant who wants the other path can still take it.
- Let repetition normalize it. Once the new default is what people meet by default, it becomes the perceived normal and stops needing a champion.
Tuning parameters¶
- Default strength — from a soft pre-selection to a near-mandate; stronger defaults move more people but erode autonomy and invite backlash.
- Friction gradient — how much easier the desired path is than the alternatives; a steep gradient changes behaviour fast but can trap the minority who genuinely need the other path.
- Opt-out ease — how simple it is to leave the default; easy opt-out keeps the redesign legitimate, but if it is too easy the default stops biting.
- Blast radius — how much of the substrate and population you re-lay at once; wider scope compounds the gain and the cost of a mistake together.
- Sunset and review — whether the new default is permanent or revisited; permanent defaults ossify into unquestioned structure no one remembers choosing.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is durability: behaviour change that does not decay because it never depended on willpower or attention in the first place, and that scales at near-zero cost per person. It shines exactly where agent-side training keeps washing out — the environment stops re-teaching the old habit.
Its hazard is that a default is never neutral, so the same lever that makes a good option effortless makes a self-serving one effortless too; steering defaults to serve the operator rather than the inhabitant is manipulation, the dark-pattern failure. Defaults also silently exclude the people they do not fit, and a good default, once normalized, becomes invisible and therefore unquestioned — which is precisely how a fragile pattern locks in. The classic misuse is to pick the default that maximizes the operator's metric and call it "for their own good." Choice architecture is the honest name for the lever and the warning about it in one[n1]; the discipline is to keep the opt-out genuinely cheap, watch who the default fails, and never pretend "no default" was an option — declining to design one just cedes it to inertia or the incumbent.
How it implements the components¶
Infrastructure and Default Redesign fills the channel side of the archetype — the machinery that actually edits the environment, not the machinery that decides what the edit should reward:
modification_channel— the built substrate and its default settings are the channel; re-laying them is the concrete act of environmental construction this mechanism performs.target_niche_and_viability_envelope— the redesign aims at a niche where the desired behaviour sustains itself once it is the default, and it must stay inside a viability envelope: accessibility, a real opt-out, no one stranded by the new normal.
It does not set the incentive or sanction that makes a behaviour pay — that selection field belongs to Institutional Rule and Incentive Redesign. It does not map who is affected before the defaults move (Stakeholder Boundary Review) or diagram the feedback loop it sets in motion (Causal-Loop and Environment-State Map).

Notes¶
There is always a default; declining to design one does not produce neutrality, it hands the default to inertia or to whoever built the substrate first. That is why shaping it deliberately beats letting the standing configuration accrete — but it is also why the mechanism carries an obligation the others do not: an inhabitant who cannot easily leave the default is no longer being nudged, but governed, and the redesign has quietly crossed from shaping the environment to compelling the agent.
