Inoculation Dose Ladder¶
Escalation protocol — instantiates Attenuated Threat Inoculation
A graded schedule that starts the receiver on the weakest workable dose of a threat and steps up strength only as each rung is mastered.
A single well-chosen dose is a guess; a sequence of doses is a controlled climb. Inoculation Dose Ladder is the schedule that decides how strong each exposure should be and when the receiver is ready for a stronger one — starting at the weakest version of the threat that still teaches something and stepping up only after the current rung is handled without being overwhelmed. Its whole concern is the gradient: not whether to expose, but at what strength and on what pacing, so that every rung is hard enough to build resistance and soft enough to be survived. Climb too fast and a rung becomes a real attack; climb too slow and the receiver habituates to trivia and never meets the threat's true form.
Example¶
Someone with a fear of flying cannot start at "35,000 feet in turbulence." A clinician builds a ladder instead: look at a photo of a plane, then sit in a parked cabin mock-up, then a taxi with no take-off, then a short daytime flight in calm weather, then a longer one. Each rung is an attenuated dose of the same feared thing, ordered so the anxiety it provokes is real but tolerable — and the client climbs only when the current rung's fear has settled, the readiness gate that opens the next step. Skip three rungs and the exposure re-traumatises instead of desensitising; linger on rung one forever and the fear of the real flight is never touched.
The clinician is not deciding whether to expose — that is settled — but engineering the strength and pacing of the climb so each step lands in the narrow band that trains without harming. That calibrated gradient, held to a genuine exposure hierarchy, is the whole mechanism.[n1]
How it works¶
- Set the floor at the weakest teaching dose. Find the mildest version of the threat that still provokes a real (not trivial) response — below the harm line, above boredom — and start there.
- Gate each step on mastery, not the calendar. Advance when the current rung is handled and the response has settled, not when a fixed interval elapses; readiness, not schedule, opens the next window.
- Shape the whole gradient, then adjust in flight. Lay the rungs out as an ordered hierarchy of increasing strength, then re-space them as the receiver's real reactions reveal which steps were too big or too small.
Tuning parameters¶
- Step size — how much stronger each rung is than the last. Big steps reach full strength faster but risk overshooting into a real attack; small steps are safer but slow and can breed habituation to the mild form.
- Readiness threshold — how fully a rung must be mastered before advancing. A strict gate is safe but slow; a loose gate is fast but courts an overwhelming jump.
- Floor and ceiling — how weak the first dose and how strong the last. Too high a floor skips the confidence-building base; too low a ceiling leaves the receiver unprepared for the threat's real intensity.
- Adaptivity — a fixed pre-set ladder versus one re-spaced from live reactions. Adaptive ladders fit the individual but demand skilled real-time judgement.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is keeping every exposure inside the narrow band that trains without harming, and turning "start weak, build up" from an instinct into an explicit, adjustable plan with an owner.
Its safety rests entirely on calibration, and dose strength is easy to misjudge — a rung that felt mild to the designer can be a full-strength attack to this particular receiver, so the same ladder can under-train one person and re-traumatise another. The classic misuse is running the ladder on a fixed calendar — advance every session regardless — which converts a responsive protocol into a conveyor belt that ignores the readiness gate that makes it safe. A too-gentle ladder has its own failure: the receiver masters a strawman and meets the real threat unprepared. The discipline is to gate on the receiver's actual response, keep each rung genuinely below the harm threshold, be willing to step down and not only up — and to pair a survived rung with a refutation that explains why the dose failed, so the climb teaches a lesson rather than merely inflicting an ordeal.
How it implements the components¶
attenuated_challenge_sample— the ladder's core act is calibrating this: choosing, for each rung, a version of the threat weakened to a strength that trains without harming.dose_timing_and_readiness_window— the pacing and readiness gates are the ladder: when to advance, how long to hold a rung, and the window in which the receiver is ready for more.
It sizes and paces the doses but does not provide the contained space they are delivered in — that is Adversarial Message Sandbox — nor the later top-ups that fight decay, which belong to Inoculation Refresh Drill. A Rumor Prebuttal Brief uses these same two components for a single timed delivery; the ladder uses them for a graded training climb.
