Some edges cannot be managed by a tool or a rule because the friction is human — mismatched languages, tacit knowledge, and trust that only a person can carry across. Interface Broker Role puts a named human in the zone: someone fluent in both regimes who translates each side's needs into the other's terms, controls who and what may cross, and is personally accountable for the edge. Example

A hospital appoints a clinical-informatics liaison to sit between its clinicians and its IT department. The two sides barely share a language: clinicians speak in workflows, urgency, and patient safety; IT speaks in tickets, release trains, and data schemas — and requests routinely die in the gap. The broker lives in both worlds. They translate a nurse's "the medication list refreshes too slowly" into a concrete latency requirement the developers can act on, and translate IT's "we need a maintenance downtime" into a ward-safe schedule. They also hold the access protocol for crossings: which clinician requests reach the development backlog, what patient data engineers may touch on the floor, who is allowed into whose systems. The handoff that used to be a black hole now has an owner, a shared vocabulary, and a controlled gate — and when something at the interface breaks, there is a single person to call.

How it works

What distinguishes the broker from a process is dual fluency held in one standing person. They sit structurally between the two regimes rather than inside either; they convert each side's needs into the other's idiom so nothing is lost in handoff; they operate an access protocol that governs what may cross and on whose say-so; and they are the single accountable owner — the throat to choke — for edge problems. The value is relational: trust built in both directions, and tacit knowledge that never fits in a ticket.

Tuning parameters

  • Neutrality vs allegiance — whether the broker sits neutral between the sides or reports into one; neutrality builds two-way trust but carries less authority.
  • Authority / mandate — advisory translator versus a gatekeeper who can approve or deny crossings; more authority is faster but concentrates a bottleneck.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that a human absorbs what tools cannot — ambiguity, tacit knowledge, and the trust that makes two wary regimes cooperate — and a named owner ends the diffusion of responsibility that leaves edges unmanaged. Its failure modes are the mirror of that power. The broker becomes a single point of failure and a bottleneck; some hoard the relationship as job security, so the interface can't function without them. If they leave, the dual fluency leaves too. And a broker can "go native," quietly advocating for one side and losing the neutrality that made them useful — or decay into a rubber-stamp gate that only ever says yes.
