Procedure — instantiates Interleaved Discrimination Practice

A performer's practice routine that rotates whole pieces, passages, or movements and returns to each cold after delay, rather than drilling one to temporary smoothness.

Interleaved Repertoire Practice is a routine for skilled performers — musicians, dancers, gymnasts — whose unit of practice is a whole passage or movement, not a classification. Its central move is to stop drilling one piece until it is smooth and instead rotate among several, so that each is entered cold, from a standing start, after the hands and mind have been doing something else. The smoothness that blocked repetition produces is often warmup-dependent: the tenth run-through of a passage is fluent because of the nine before it, and that fluency evaporates when the passage must be played first, on stage, or after a page turn. This procedure targets exactly that dependence. It also governs when to rotate — a passage still being learned needs blocked repetition first; the rotation is earned once a minimal clean representation exists — and it judges success by whether the passage survives a later, cold return, not by how good the warmed-up rep felt.

Example

A conservatory pianist is preparing four contrasting pieces for a jury. Left to habit, she practices one for ninety minutes, gets it gleaming, and moves on — and on jury day the first piece, played cold, falls apart at the opening leap she had "mastered" the week before. Her teacher rewrites the session. Each piece first gets its own blocked woodshedding until she can play it once through acceptably from a standing start; only then does it enter the rotation. Now a session cycles: eight minutes on the Bach, cold-start the Chopin, cold-start the Bartók, back to the Bach without a warmup run, and every hard passage is revisited only after two other pieces have intervened. The rule is explicit — no second attempt at a passage until you have played something else first, and every passage must survive a cold entry. The practice feels worse; the Chopin leap misfires more often in the room than it used to. But on jury day the cold openings hold, because cold openings are precisely what she rehearsed.

How it works

  • Block to acquire, then rotate. A passage stays in isolated repetition only until a minimal clean run exists; a stated fluency threshold triggers its promotion into the rotation. Rotation is not imposed on unlearned material.
  • Enter cold. The defining act is performing a passage from a standing start, after intervening material, with no immediately preceding warmup run — the retrieval must start from nothing.
  • Space the returns. Repeats of a passage are separated by other pieces and, across sessions, by days, so each return is a genuine reload rather than a continuation.
  • Judge by the cold return. The evaluated performance is the delayed, unwarmed one; a great warmed-up rep does not count as evidence the passage is secure.

Tuning parameters

  • Promotion threshold — how clean a passage must be before it joins the rotation. Set high and the performer wastes rotation slots on shaky material that needs blocked repair; set low and rotation begins before there is anything to rotate.
  • Rotation grain — whole piece, section, or single hard passage. Fine grain interleaves more contrasts per session; coarse grain preserves musical continuity.
  • Cold-entry strictness — whether any warmup, scan, or slow run is allowed before a rotated attempt. Strict cold entry maximizes transfer to performance; some warmup eases frustration but leaks the crutch the routine is trying to remove.
  • Return delay — minutes within a session, or days across sessions, before a passage recurs. Longer delays build more durable recall but raise error rates during practice.
  • Rotation breadth — how many pieces cycle at once. Broad rotation resembles a real program; narrow rotation leaves room to still repair a stubborn passage.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it rehearses the actual performance condition — a cold, unlabeled, first-time entry — instead of the comfortable warmed-up one, defeating the warmup-dependent fluency that fools performers into thinking they are ready. The added within-session difficulty is a direct instance of the contextual interference effect, where random or interleaved practice of motor tasks depresses practice-time performance yet improves retention and transfer relative to blocked practice.[n1]

Its failure mode is premature rotation: fold a passage into the mix before a clean representation exists and the rotation just multiplies sloppy, error-engraining reps — the performer rehearses the mistake in three pieces instead of fixing it in one. The related misuse is over-interleaving, where nothing is ever drilled long enough to repair a genuinely hard bar, so difficult spots stay perpetually rough. The guarding discipline is to keep a blocked repair lane: any passage failing its cold entries repeatedly drops back to isolated, slow, focused repetition until it re-earns its place in the rotation.

How it implements the components

  • retrieval_or_performance_prompt — the cold entry is the active-attempt prompt: the performer must produce the passage from a standing start before any correction, so the performance itself is the retrieval.
  • delayed_retention_and_transfer_probe — success is judged by the delayed, unwarmed return, making each cold re-entry a running probe of durable, performance-ready recall.

It does NOT implement discrimination_target_set, contrast_dimension_map, or comparison_feedback_loop — this procedure trains performance recall, not classification, so it neither curates confusable categories nor feeds back on a discriminating cue; that machinery belongs to Mixed Problem Set and Near-Miss Case Rotation.
