Lead-Support Mix Check verifies the balance across all of those channels at once. It assigns each support a role in a hierarchy beneath the lead, budgets how much prominence each may take, and checks both failure directions: no support may swell into a second figure, and none may drop below the level where it still does its supporting work. Its defining move is that it manages a hierarchy of coordinated channels over time — not a single figure/ground assignment, and not a whole-field salience ranking — so the lead stays forward through every section and state of the piece.

Example

An engineer is mixing a pop song. The lead is the lead vocal; the supports are drums, bass, rhythm guitar, backing vocals, and a synth pad. The mix check works the hierarchy channel by channel: solo the vocal, then bring each support up only until it is present under the vocal. Drums and bass anchor; rhythm guitar and pad fill; backing vocals lift the chorus but never overtake the lead. Two failure modes surface. The pad, left lush, starts to bloom into a second figure that competes with the vocal for the ear — a support that has become a rival lead. The bass, tucked too low, leaves the track thin and gutless — a support that has vanished. The check budgets each channel's prominence across the arrangement: quieter supports in the verse, a fuller bed in the chorus, but the vocal always on top. The outcome is a mix where the lead is unmistakably the figure from first line to last, and every support is doing audible, subordinate work.

How it works

The distinguishing method is a two-directional balance across ranked channels over time:

  • Assign the hierarchy. Name the lead and give each support a role — primary support, fill, accent — so the channels are ranked, not just present.
  • Budget prominence per channel. Set how much of the field's attention each support may take, and how that budget shifts across sections or states.
  • Check both directions. Verify no support crosses into figure territory (over-prominent) and none falls below usefulness (vanished), in context rather than soloed.
  • Confirm across states. Re-check that the lead stays forward through every section, verse to chorus, calm to alert.

It balances coordinated channels; it does not define the lead, tune a single contrast gradient, or reduce a static field to declutter it.

Tuning parameters

  • Channel roles and count — how many supports and how finely their roles are ranked. More channels enrich the bed but crowd the budget.
  • Lead headroom — how far above the supports the lead sits. Generous headroom guarantees clarity but can feel disconnected from the bed.
  • Dynamic variation — how much the mix shifts by section. More variation adds life but risks the lead slipping on a busy passage.
  • Support redundancy — how many supports carry a given function before one is dispensable. Redundancy is robust but competes for prominence budget.

The classic misuse is shoving the lead so far up that supports become inaudible — loudness-war logic that wins the moment and loses the frame the supports were providing.
