Local Co-Design Sprint¶
Co-design process — instantiates Cultural Friction Mediation Design
A short, hands-on build cycle in which local users and maintainers prototype adapted versions of the artifact, so fit is designed with them rather than for them.
The Local Co-Design Sprint is a short, iterative build cycle that turns adaptation ideas into working prototypes alongside the people who will use and maintain the artifact. Its defining premise is designed-with, not designed-for: local users and maintainers are not consulted about a finished design, they hold the pen while it is being shaped, so the adapted form embeds their norms by construction rather than by later correction. Where the workshop enumerates options on paper and the panel draws the lines, the sprint is where a norm-compatible version is actually made — and narrowed by building and trying.
Example¶
An agronomy advisory app built around individual push-notifications ("apply fertilizer Tuesday") is landing badly with smallholder farmers who make planting decisions communally and seasonally, guided by a trusted local agro-dealer. A Local Co-Design Sprint puts farmers, the agro-dealer, and a maintainer through a few days of rapid prototyping. They reshape the tool: advice framed around the seasonal calendar the community already uses, delivered through the agro-dealer as the trusted intermediary rather than as an anonymous alert, with a shared view a group can read together. Several rough prototypes are tried and narrowed to one that fits. The output is a working norm-compatible interface and the set of adaptations that were explored to reach it — designed with the farmers, so the fit is theirs.
How it works¶
The distinguishing feature is that it is material and iterative. Instead of discussing adaptation, participants make rough versions, react to them, and revise across a handful of tight loops. Maintainers are in the room, not just users, so the adapted form is something the community can sustain after the sprint ends. The prototypes are treated as disposable — the point is to find fit fast, not to defend a first idea.
Tuning parameters¶
- Participant mix — which users, and whether the people who will maintain the artifact are included, since a form no local can sustain is not a fit.
- Prototype fidelity — paper sketches versus working builds. Lower fidelity iterates faster; higher fidelity tests real use.
- Loop count and length — how many make-react-revise cycles, and how tight, trading depth against speed.
- Decision rights — who actually chooses among prototypes. If the sponsor keeps the pen, it is consultation wearing a sprint's clothes.
- Changeable scope — which parts of the artifact are open to redesign and which are fixed by the nonnegotiable boundary, so the sprint adapts the convention without eroding the causal core.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is designing fit directly and surfacing tacit needs that appear only when someone tries to use a real thing. Its failure modes: capture by the most available or most vocal participants, who may not represent the community; "participation-washing," where co-design is decoration on a design that was never actually open to change; and scope creep that quietly adapts away the artifact's causal core along with its conventions. The classic misuse is to stage the sprint for legitimacy while the real decisions sit elsewhere. This mechanism sits squarely in the tradition of participatory design — the principle that the people who will use a system should shape it — and inherits both its power and its standing caution that participation without real decision rights is theatre.[n1] The guard is genuine decision rights for participants plus an explicit line protecting the nonnegotiables.
How it implements the components¶
norm_compatible_interface— builds the actual adapted form that fits local norms, produced with users rather than retrofitted for them.local_adaptation_option_set— materializes and narrows the candidate adaptations into working prototypes (the Cultural Fit Workshop enumerates them on paper; the sprint builds and tests them).
It does not set the nonnegotiable value boundary that bounds what may be changed — that is the Community Review Panel's — nor profile the artifact's assumptions upfront, which is the Cultural Fit Workshop's external_artifact_profile.
