A Look-Move-Look Cycle is the tight embodied rhythm of alternating a small physical advance with a fresh read of the scene, paced so you never move faster than you can re-perceive. Each turn of the cycle is the same: read the scene from where you are, commit one small movement, then stop and read again from the new position — and the size and speed of the next movement are set by how much the last read revealed. Its defining idea is cadence discipline: the loop's safety and its value both come from the rate, from refusing to bank a second move on a perception formed before the first. It is a human pacing procedure, not a piece of hardware and not a chained experiment; the one thing it governs is the tempo of interleaving action and perception.

Example

A whitewater kayaker reaches the horizon line of a read-and-run rapid: the river tips out of sight and she cannot see the line below from up top. Rather than commit to the whole drop blind, she runs it in segments — eddy-hopping. From the eddy she's in, she reads the water she can see, picks the next eddy that is both visible and reachable, ferries across to it, and stops. From that new eddy a different slice of the rapid opens up: a hole that was hidden behind a boulder, and a clean tongue of green water to its left that she couldn't see a moment ago. She reads again, picks the next eddy, moves again.

Cadence is the whole game. If she links two moves without stopping to re-read between them, she is committing to water she has never seen. Held to the rhythm, she descends a rapid she could never have scouted whole — each stroke of progress chosen from what the previous position exposed, at a pace tuned to how much each eddy revealed.

How it works

  • Bound every move to a re-readable next position. You never advance past the point where you can stop and see again; the reachable, re-perceivable next vantage is the unit of movement.
  • Reset attention on each stop. Every pause is a deliberate re-scan of the whole scene from the new position, not a glance that confirms what you already expected.
  • Scale the move to what you can see. Movement magnitude shrinks as visibility drops — less revealed means a smaller next step.
  • Govern the tempo, not just the step. The tuned variable is cadence: the rate at which move and read alternate, matched to how fast the field itself is changing.

Tuning parameters

  • Cadence — how quickly move and read alternate; faster covers ground but risks committing on stale perception, slower is safe but can stall.
  • Step size — how far each advance reaches; larger is efficient but overshoots the point where you could still re-read.
  • Attention reset depth — a full re-scan versus a quick confirming glance; deeper is thorough but costs time per cycle.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it lets you traverse a space you cannot perceive whole — and do it safely — by never outrunning your own perception. It is Boyd's OODA loop compressed to arm's length, where tempo matched to the situation beats a slower attempt to read the whole scene at once.[n1]

Its failure mode is loop thrashing: a cadence so fast, or steps so timid, that perception never stabilizes and the actor dithers in place, re-reading the same slice without advancing. The classic misuse is treating a fast cadence as inherently better — but the right cadence is set by the environment's rate of change and your re-read time, not by eagerness to move. The guarding discipline is to size each step from what you could actually re-perceive afterward, not from how badly you want to be further along.
