Checklist — instantiates Abstraction–Substrate Traceability Guardrail
Prompts reviewers to ask where the abstraction diverges from the substrate, when direct observation should override it, and which uses exceed its scope.
A Map–Territory Review Checklist is a short set of questions inserted at the moment of reliance, forcing a decision-maker to consciously choose between the abstraction and the reality it stands for before acting on it. Its defining idea is the interruption: reification is automatic substitution, and the checklist breaks the automaticity by making someone pause and answer "am I acting on the territory or on the map, and is this map good enough for this move?" It is not a document about the abstraction and not a monitor of the abstraction — it is a live gate that fires when a person is about to rely, asking whether direct observation should override the representation here and whether this particular use falls inside the abstraction's authorized scope. It converts scope from fine print into an active checkpoint.
Example¶
A wildfire incident commander is about to order an evacuation route based on the pre-drawn GIS hazard map: the map shows Ridge Road as a clear egress. Before committing, the incident's protocol requires a Map–Territory Review Checklist. The questions are blunt. When was this map's terrain last verified against the field? — the fuel-load layer is from last season. Is there a direct observation that should override it? — a spotter reports the road is already smoke-choked and a spot fire has jumped it. Is this use inside the map's scope? — the map was built for pre-season planning, not real-time fire behavior.
Each answer pushes the same way: the map is out of scope for this decision and the field observation must govern. The commander reroutes. The checklist did not build a better map or forbid maps; it forced the one question automatic reliance skips — is the territory saying something the map can't — at the only moment it mattered.
How it works¶
The checklist is decision-triggered and answer-forcing:
- Fire at the reliance point. The prompt appears when someone is about to act on the abstraction, not in an archive — attached to the approval, the order, the sign-off.
- Ask the substitution question. "Are you acting on the substrate, an abstraction, or a proxy?" — naming which one, out loud, is most of the guard.
- Ask the override question. "Is there a direct observation that should outrank the representation here?" — with a default that fresh field evidence wins over a stale map.
- Ask the scope question. "Is this use inside what the abstraction is authorized for?" — checking the intended-use boundary against the use at hand, and stopping when the move exceeds it.
The distinguishing discipline is that it produces a decision at a moment, not a record and not a metric: its whole output is a reviewer's live answer about whether to trust the map for this act.
Tuning parameters¶
- Trigger stakes — which decisions fire the checklist (only irreversible or high-harm actions, or every reliance). Broad triggers catch more substitution but risk checklist fatigue.
- Prompt count — three sharp questions versus a long form. Short lists get answered honestly; long ones get rubber-stamped.
- Override default — how strongly fresh direct observation is presumed to outrank the abstraction. A strong default guards against stale maps but can discard the abstraction's genuine value.
- Scope strictness — whether an out-of-scope answer advises caution or hard-blocks the action. Hard blocks prevent misuse but can stall legitimate edge decisions.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it intervenes at exactly the point reification does its damage — the instant of automatic reliance — and costs only seconds. It operationalizes the oldest warning in the field, that the map is not the territory, by making a human affirm which one they are standing on.[n1] It is especially powerful where a stale or out-of-scope representation would otherwise silently govern a live, changing situation.
It misleads when it degrades into ritual: three questions answered "yes, yes, yes" without thought are worse than none, because they manufacture the appearance of a check while the substitution proceeds. It also can't help if the reviewer has no access to the territory — asking "should direct observation override?" is empty when no direct observation is available. The classic misuse is bolting the checklist onto a decision while removing every path to the substrate, so the only honest answer is unknowable. The guarding discipline is to keep the list short enough to be answered honestly, to require a substantive answer (not a checkbox) to the override question, and to ensure the territory is actually reachable when the checklist asks about it.
How it implements the components¶
Map–Territory Review Checklist fills the point-of-decision components — the guardrail's live interruption of automatic reliance:
reliance_decision_gate— it is the gate: a pause before high-stakes action that forces a conscious choice between substrate, abstraction, and proxy, and an override when direct evidence should win.validity_scope_boundary— its scope question checks the use at hand against the abstraction's authorized boundary and stops the action when the use exceeds it.
It does not declare that scope up front in a static document (representational_claim_statement, abstraction_confidence_label) — that is Model Card or Datasheet Linkage; nor does it render a caveat on the interface itself (boundary_disclosure_surface) — that is Point-of-Use Reification Warning, a passive display where this checklist demands an active answer.
