Motif Hierarchy Map¶
Analysis artifact — instantiates Pattern–Rhythm Design
Diagrams how a motif nests across scales — unit, phrase, field — and where the nesting must stop, so close and distant views stay related.
A Motif Hierarchy Map charts the vertical structure of a pattern: how a local unit combines into a grouped phrase, how phrases aggregate into a field, and how a large-scale motif is itself built from the small ones — together with an explicit rule for where the recursion stops. Its defining concern is the relation between levels and how each level reads at its own viewing distance, not the order of units along a single run. It exists because a pattern that is coherent up close can dissolve or fight itself at a distance; the map makes the cross-scale relationships inspectable before a viewer ever discovers them the hard way. It is a diagnostic diagram, not a placement grid and not a beat chart — it answers how the scales relate, leaving where each unit sits and what rhythm the run makes to other artifacts.
Example¶
A studio is documenting a large Islamic geometric star pattern — a girih design — for a mosque's tiled dado, and the problem is that the design lives at three scales at once. The map lays them out as tiers. At the bottom tier are the primitive tiles (the elementary decagon, bowtie, and hexagon shapes) and their strapwork; the middle tier shows how a fixed cluster of those tiles resolves into a ten-point star "rosette"; the top tier shows how rosettes tile the whole wall into a larger super-pattern whose implied lines are visible only from across the courtyard. Each tier is annotated with the distance it is meant to be read from: the strapwork rewards touching-distance inspection, the rosette reads at conversational range, the super-pattern only resolves at fifteen metres.
Charting it this way catches a real conflict. At the middle tier the rosette's contrast is so strong that, viewed from across the courtyard, it out-shouts the top-tier super-pattern the design was supposed to reveal — the levels compete instead of nesting. Because the map names a recursion stop (three tiers, no deeper self-similarity) and pins each tier to a viewing distance, the studio can rebalance the rosette's value so the large-scale reading survives, rather than discovering the clash only after the tiles are fired and set.
How it works¶
- Stack the levels. Enumerate the tiers — unit, phrase/cluster, field, super-motif — and show, for each, which lower-level elements compose it.
- State the composition relation. For every step up, record how the lower level builds the higher one (repetition, rotational symmetry, subdivision) so the nesting is a rule and not a coincidence.
- Pin each level to a viewing distance. Annotate the scale and range at which each tier is meant to resolve, since a tier that never gets its own viewing distance is doing no work.
- Mark the recursion stop. Declare the maximum depth, so self-similarity is deliberate and does not spiral into scaleless noise.
The map's distinctive output is a legibility budget across scales: which level owns which viewing distance, and where two levels are contending for the same one.
Tuning parameters¶
- Depth of nesting — how many tiers are governed. More tiers reward exploration but multiply the chances that two levels collide at one distance.
- Contrast allocation across tiers — how visual weight is divided between levels. Loading it low makes detail sing but can bury the large-scale reading; loading it high does the reverse.
- Viewing-distance spread — how far apart the tiers' intended ranges are set. Wide spread keeps levels from competing; narrow spread risks moiré and mutual interference.
- Recursion-stop depth — where self-similarity is cut off. Cutting early keeps the field calm; cutting late invites aliasing and cognitive load.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it exposes cross-scale conflicts — a phrase that erases the field, a super-motif no viewing distance ever reveals — while they are still cheap to fix, and it gives multiple contributors a shared account of which level matters where. It is the artifact that keeps "it works up close" from being mistaken for "it works."
Its failure mode is seductive over-nesting: because tiers are satisfying to draw, a map can propose more levels than any real viewer will ever resolve, and adjacent scales then interfere as moiré rather than cooperating.[n1] A related misuse is mistaking mere self-similarity for hierarchy — repeating the same motif at every scale is not the same as levels that each carry distinct work, and it collapses into scaleless texture. The guarding discipline is to justify every tier by a viewing distance a real user occupies and to enforce the recursion stop, so depth is earned by perception rather than by drawing convenience.
How it implements the components¶
hierarchy_nesting_and_scale_relation— it is this component: the tiered account of how units, phrases, and fields compose across levels, with the recursion stop made explicit.proportion_scale_and_viewing_calibration— pinning each tier to the distance and size at which it is meant to resolve is exactly this calibration.
It does not sequence the units into pulses and accents along the run (rhythmic_sequence_and_cadence_structure — that is the Sequence and Alternation Chart, which organizes the horizontal order the way this map organizes the vertical scales), nor does it fix the coordinate frame units sit on (alignment_grid_and_reference_frame — the Modular Grid Specification).
