Paired Activation Rehearsal Protocol¶
A rehearsal protocol — instantiates Co-Activation Coupling Design
Drives a named pair of units into genuine joint activation, again and again, until the cue reliably recruits its target — the deliberate 'make them fire together' drill.
If co-activation is the lever, this is the mechanism that actually pulls it. The Paired Activation Rehearsal Protocol names a specific pair — a cue and the response it should recruit — and then produces real, attended, simultaneous activation of both, repeated on a plan until the cue alone calls up its target. Its defining move is that it manufactures valid joint activation deliberately, rather than waiting for the pair to happen to co-occur in the wild. It is the content-and-dosage layer: which pair, and how many well-formed reps it takes to consolidate — the raw material every downstream weight change feeds on.
Example¶
A hospital onboards forty new staff and needs each to reliably attach names to faces on the ward. Ambient exposure ("you'll pick it up") reliably fails — people recognize a face but blank on the name exactly when it matters. The rehearsal protocol makes the pairing explicit: each trial shows a face and its name together, the learner actively produces the name while looking at the face (not merely reads it), and each pair is drilled to a criterion of three correct unaided recalls. Weak pairs get extra reps; mastered pairs drop out. Because the two units are genuinely co-activated — face present, name self-generated — the association forms, where passive review would have left forty half-formed links.[n1] The protocol says nothing about when to schedule the reps or what context to gate them to; it guarantees only that each rep is a valid, well-formed co-activation of the intended pair.
How it works¶
The protocol turns a target pairing into a sequence of well-formed co-activation events. It (1) names the cue and target explicitly, (2) constructs trials in which both are genuinely active at once — ideally with the target produced rather than merely presented, since a self-generated response is a stronger co-activation than a passive one — and (3) repeats to a mastery criterion, concentrating reps on the pairs that are still weak. Its whole quality bar is the validity of each rep: a trial where the two units did not truly co-activate (the learner guessed, or attention wandered) is a wasted or even harmful rep. It defines the pair and the dose; it hands the timing envelope and the surrounding weight arithmetic to other mechanisms.
Tuning parameters¶
- Production vs. presentation — whether the target is recalled/generated by the system or merely shown. Production builds stronger links but is harder and slower early.
- Mastery criterion — how many clean reps before a pair is "done." Higher criteria consolidate more durably at the cost of time.
- Rep concentration — how aggressively effort is redirected to still-weak pairs versus even coverage.
- Pair granularity — whether a compound target is drilled whole or decomposed into sub-pairings first.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is directness: when an association simply must exist and ambient exposure isn't forming it, deliberate valid rehearsal is the surest way to build it. Its failure modes come from counting reps instead of valid reps — massed, inattentive, or guessed trials inflate the rep count while consolidating little, and over-drilling a single pair in isolation can build a brittle, context-free reflex that later has to be gated or pruned. The classic misuse is treating volume as the goal ("we ran a thousand reps") when un-validated volume is exactly what fails to transfer. The discipline is to guard rep quality — real joint activation, ideally produced — and to hand spacing to the schedule and context to the gate rather than trying to solve everything with more reps.
