Participatory Accommodation-Option Workshop¶
Method — instantiates Human-Capacity Accommodation Design
Generates inclusive defaults, equivalent paths, tools, pacing, support, and fallback with affected people.
Once the essential outcome is fixed and the mismatch is mapped, someone has to invent the alternatives — and the people who best know where a design will still bite are the ones it excludes. Participatory Accommodation-Option Workshop is a structured, co-design session that generates the option set with affected people rather than for them. Its output is deliberately plural: an inclusive default that helps most people, a small set of maintained equivalent paths, adjustable tools and pacing, human support, and a fallback for when the primary path breaks. Its one defining idea is generative co-production — it opens the design space and populates it from lived experience, surfacing conflicting needs before any single "accessible solution" hardens into another fixed standard. It does not rule on what must be preserved, and it does not pass judgment on whether an option truly delivers equal access; it produces the candidates and the reasons rejected ones were set aside.
Example¶
A university's biology department is redesigning a timed lab practical after several students with different needs struggled — one with limited hand dexterity for pipetting, one who fatigues under the two-hour continuous format, one who cannot track fast verbal instructions in a noisy lab. Rather than the course committee inventing a fix, they run a workshop with those students, a lab technician, and a disability-services advisor. Working from the fixed essential outcome (demonstrate correct experimental technique and interpretation) and the mismatch ledger, the group generates a set: an inclusive default of written station instructions plus a quieter benched slot; an equivalent path using assistive pipetting aids; a split-session option that breaks the two hours with a recovery interval; and a fallback for equipment failure. Crucially, the session exposes a conflict the committee would have missed — the split-session that helps one student lengthens exposure and fatigue for another — so the output preserves both pacing options rather than collapsing to one. The product is a documented option set with rationales, not a decision.
How it works¶
The method is generation under constraint, with the affected people in the room:
- Anchor on fixed inputs. Start from the essential-outcome frame and the mismatch ledger so the group designs around the real goal, not the old method.
- Diverge across the transformation ladder. Elicit options in order — remove nonessential demand, redistribute, substitute a modality, augment with tools, add human support, add a recovery path — so cheap universal fixes surface before bespoke ones.
- Surface conflicts openly. Name where one person's help is another's harm, and keep both paths rather than averaging them away.
- Record rejects with reasons. Log why a candidate was dropped (infeasible, unsafe, disliked) so the set carries its own history.
- Preserve choice. Leave the set plural and configurable; the workshop generates paths, it does not pick the winner.
Tuning parameters¶
- Participation depth — consulted-once versus full co-design partners; deeper participation surfaces more real conflict but costs time and coordination.
- Divergence breadth — how many options the group is pushed to generate before converging; more breadth avoids first-idea lock-in but risks unfocused sprawl.
- Default-versus-personalization mix — how much is solved by an inclusive default versus adjustable individual settings; leaning on defaults cuts maintenance but can still exclude the tails.
- Facilitation structure — free brainstorm versus laddered prompts; structure keeps quiet participants included but can steer the group.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it produces options the design team could not have imagined and catches conflicting needs before one solution is frozen — it is the antidote to the single "accessible version" that quietly excludes a different group.
Its failure mode is that a workshop can generate attractive, well-liked options with no evidence they actually deliver equal access — enthusiasm is not equivalence, and a session that runs on goodwill can produce a slower, more exposed path that everyone in the room nonetheless approves. The classic misuse is tokenism: inviting affected people to a room where the decision is already made, so the participation is theater. The guarding discipline is the movement's own rule — nothing about us without us — enforced as real authorship plus a firm handoff: the workshop's output is candidates with rationales, which must then be certified by a separate equivalence test before any becomes the accommodation.[n1]
How it implements the components¶
This mechanism fills exactly one component — the generative one — and hands off the rest:
accommodation_option_and_equivalent_path_set— its whole output: inclusive defaults, configurable adjustments, assistive tools, pacing, human support, and fallback, co-produced and carrying the rationales for rejected candidates.
It does not decide what is essential or set the safety bar (essential_outcome_user_and_context_frame, safety_dignity_privacy_and_burden_gate) — those belong to its nearest twin, the Essential-Function and Method-Separation Review, which fixes the essentials this workshop then designs against. It also does not build the capacity or demand profiles or the ledger (representative_human_capacity_and_variability_profile, task_environment_and_interface_demand_map, mismatch_barrier_workaround_and_risk_ledger), nor test equivalence, plan delivery, or monitor use (accommodation_implementation_support_and_ownership_plan, in_context_fit_breakdown_and_revision_monitor).
