A Peer Review Protocol organizes learners to give each other structured feedback on work-in-progress, judged against shared criteria, before any final assessment. Example

In a lab-writing course, before reports are graded, each student's draft is read by two classmates using a shared criteria sheet: is the hypothesis testable, does the method support the conclusion, are limitations stated? Reviewers write specific comments tied to those criteria, not "looks good." One student, reviewing two peers' reports, notices that one draws a causal conclusion from a correlational design — and, realizing it, spots the same overreach in her own draft. Authors revise against the pooled feedback before submitting. The reports improve, but so does every reviewer's sense of what a defensible conclusion looks like, learned by having to judge one.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its failure mode is variance: peer feedback ranges wildly in quality and can be wrong, harsh, or collusive ("I'll go easy if you do").
