Every mechanism before this one predicts; only this one observes the built result. Post-Installation Site Response Review goes back to the finished work, in place, across a stretch of real time, and checks whether the site actually does what the design assumed — whether the beam lands, the void reads, the material holds, the viewers find the sightline, the seasons behave as modeled. Its defining stance is after the fact and on the record: it compares intended site response against observed site response and writes down the difference, both to fix what's fixable and to correct the documentation so the archive reflects the work as it truly lives at the site, not as it was drawn. It is the loop that turns a one-off installation into knowledge — and the honest record of why the work belongs where it is.

Example

A campus library courtyard receives a shallow reflecting basin whose still surface is meant to mirror the library's carved facade — architecture "doubled" as abstraction. A year after installation, the review returns across all four seasons and reads the work against its own promises. Much holds: at low sun the mirrored facade is exactly the intended effect. But the record diverges from the design in ways worth capturing. Autumn leaves from an adjacent oak the maquette never modeled blanket the basin for six weeks, and the mirror becomes a leaf-choked pond; wind from a channel between two buildings ruffles the surface most afternoons, breaking the reflection at precisely the busy hour; and a hairline efflorescence is blooming on the basin's stone edge.

The review does two things with this. It routes the fixable items — a seasonal skimming schedule, a reconsidered planting, a sealer trial — to maintenance and the constraint register. And it updates the work's documentation: the reflection is now recorded as a morning and evening effect, not an all-day one; the leaf season is logged as a known state; the wind dependency is named. The next courtyard commission inherits a truthful account of how this site actually treated the work, instead of the hopeful version in the original drawings. The practice mirrors post-occupancy evaluation in architecture — revisiting a finished building to learn how it really performs.

How it works

  • Return over real time. Observe the installed work across enough of the temporal cycle — seasons, weather, day and night, real occupancy — to see how the site genuinely behaves, not just how it looked on opening day.
  • Compare intended vs. observed response. Check each site-dependent effect the design promised — light, shadow, reflection, sightline, material, meaning — against what the place actually delivers, and note every divergence.
  • Split findings into fix and record. Route correctable issues to maintenance and the constraint register; capture the rest as truthful updates to how the work behaves.
  • Reconcile the documentation. Rewrite the record so it describes the work as-built and as-living — the effects that hold, the states it passes through, the dependencies that turned out real — closing the gap between drawing and reality.

Tuning parameters

  • Review horizon — a single post-install visit, or a year-plus of periodic returns. A longer horizon catches seasonal and weathering behavior; a short one only samples the opening condition.
  • Effect coverage — spot-check the hero effect, or audit every site-dependent claim the design made. Full coverage catches the quiet failures; a spot check is cheaper but partial.
  • Documentation depth — light-touch as-built notes, or a full reconciled record with photos across conditions. Deeper records serve future commissions and stewardship but cost time to compile.
  • Feedback reach — local fixes only, or lessons fed back to the commissioner and future projects. Wider reach compounds the learning; narrow keeps it to this one work.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is being the only mechanism that closes the loop between prediction and reality: it catches the assumption that didn't survive contact with the site — the unmodeled tree, the channelled wind, the material that weathers off-script — and it produces documentation that finally matches the work, clarifying on the record why it belongs where it is. Done seriously it is post-occupancy evaluation for public art, and its findings are how a practice stops repeating the same site misjudgments.[1]

It misleads when it is run once, too soon — a single visit weeks after install certifies an opening-day condition and misses the season that breaks the work — or when it becomes a defensive sign-off that records success and buries the divergences. Because it lands after commitment, there is pressure to rationalize what can no longer be changed rather than document it honestly. And it observes; it does not, by itself, fix. The discipline is to return across the real temporal range, write down the divergences whether or not they flatter the design, and route the fixable ones to the mechanisms and stewards that can act.
