Ritual — instantiates Beneficial Emergence Amplification
Gives a promising bottom-up practice a stage — a demo, a story, a fair — so it becomes visible and its originators get credit, without freezing it into a rule.
A Practice Showcase is a staged, time-bounded event where a promising practice is shown — demoed, narrated, exhibited — to an audience wider than the people who invented it, with the originators themselves on the stage. Its defining move is that it trades in attention and legitimacy: in a single high-bandwidth burst it converts an invisible practice into a visible, credited one, and it does so by pull rather than push. Nobody is required to adopt anything; they are simply exposed to a living example and its creators. That makes it the archetype's fastest, cheapest visibility channel — and the one most careful to keep the spotlight on the people, not just the procedure.
Example¶
A manufacturing plant runs a quarterly "improvement fair." A maintenance crew has quietly invented a quick-changeover trick that shaves fifteen minutes off every line switchover, and at the fair they staff a booth: they run the changeover live for anyone who wanders past, tell the story of the botched shift that led them to it, and take questions from other crews and a couple of plant managers. By the end of the afternoon three other lines have asked to try the trick, the crew has been publicly named and thanked in front of their peers, and leadership has watched the practice work with their own eyes — without having mandated a thing. The pattern that would have stayed inside one crew now has an audience, credit, and momentum.
How it works¶
- Episodic, not standing. It is an event with a beginning and end, which concentrates attention rather than diffusing it into routine.
- Originator-presented. The people who created the practice show it, which both credits them and keeps the tacit nuance intact that a second-hand retelling would lose.
- Demonstration as evidence. Seeing the practice produce its result in front of you is more persuasive than any memo claiming it works.
- Pull, not push. The audience opts into following up; exposure creates demand instead of imposing compliance.
- Low commitment. The cost of attending is only attention, so patterns get a hearing they'd never earn through a formal rollout.
Tuning parameters¶
- Visibility amplitude — an intimate story session versus an all-hands broadcast. Higher amplitude spreads faster but raises performance pressure and can distort a still-early pattern.
- Curation selectivity — how many practices, and which, get the stage. Selective raises signal but risks a survivorship frame and crowds out quieter patterns that never volunteer.
- Narrative vs. metric framing — telling the story versus reporting the numbers. Story carries context and tacit nuance; metrics travel further but flatten what made it work.
- Originator centrality — how much the stage belongs to the creators versus a polished internal-comms team. More centrality preserves fidelity and credit; less makes for a slicker but hollower show.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is speed and motivation at almost no cost: it surfaces patterns that would otherwise die invisible, and it gives originators legitimacy and public credit that money often can't buy.
Its structural failure mode is survivorship bias sliding into performance theater. A showcase only ever features winners — the failures never get a booth — so the audience systematically overweights what worked and never sees the conditions or near-misses behind it[n1]. Worse, once a stage exists, people start optimizing for a good demo rather than a good practice. The classic misuse is the polished keynote that strips the originators out and presents a sanitized "success story" the audience can admire but cannot actually reproduce. The guarding discipline is to keep the creators on stage, show the messy enabling conditions and the failures alongside the win, and pair the showcase with a channel that carries context — a peer network or a repository — so admiration can turn into faithful adoption.
