Self-binding commitment device — instantiates Commitment Lifecycle Governance
Makes a commitment credible by removing or raising the cost of the promisor's own future option to back out — binding the maker's future self rather than the counterparty.
A Precommitment Device makes a commitment credible from the inside. Instead of persuading a counterparty to trust the promise, it alters the promisor's own future choice set so that reneging becomes impossible, costly, or slow. Its defining move among its siblings is that the party bound is the maker, not the audience: the device closes the maker's own escape hatch before temptation, panic, or second thoughts arrive. In the lifecycle frame it is the instrument that supplies binding force at the moment a commitment is made — and a well-built one ships with an explicit, legitimate exit rule, so the commitment can still be ended when its basis genuinely changes rather than trapping the owner in a promise that has outlived its reason.
Example¶
While stable, a person living with bipolar disorder signs a psychiatric advance directive — a Ulysses contract — authorizing a named clinician to admit and treat them during a future manic crisis, even if, in that state, they refuse care. This binds their own future self: the well self removes the crisis self's option to walk away. Months later, mid-episode, they demand discharge — but the directive, agreed in advance, holds, and treatment proceeds. Crucially, the arrangement can be reviewed, renewed, or revoked only while they are well, never mid-crisis, which is exactly the window the device is built to close. Made while competent, honoured during the crisis, and revisited once stable again, it runs a full lifecycle — and its binding force comes entirely from the maker having foreclosed their own future retreat, not from any threat a counterparty holds over them.
How it works¶
- Bind at the source. The device attaches to the promisor's own future decision, not to the counterparty's trust — it changes what the maker will be able to do, not merely what they say.
- Remove or raise the cost of the exit. It eliminates the fallback (burning the bridge), imposes a penalty for defection, hands the decision to a third party or a fixed rule, or makes reversal deliberately slow.
- Set the revocation window narrow, and place it right. Reversal is confined to conditions where the commitment's basis can be legitimately re-examined, and closed precisely when the temptation to defect is strongest.
- Pair with a legitimate release. A durable device carries an explicit, costly-but-real exit rule, so the commitment ends when its basis is gone instead of hardening into a trap.
Tuning parameters¶
- Bindingness — how hard defection is made, from a mild self-imposed penalty to a genuinely irreversible step. Tighter binding buys credibility but leaves less room to adapt if circumstances change.
- Revocation window — when, and under what conditions, reversal is permitted. Narrow it to defeat backsliding; widen it to preserve legitimate escape.
- Enforcement locus — who or what holds the maker to it: a third party, an automatic rule, a forfeited stake, or a burned fallback. This sets how tamper-proof the binding is.
- Trigger scope — which future situations the device fires in; over-broad triggers bind cases the maker never meant to precommit.
- Reversal cost — the price of legitimate exit. High cost deters frivolous defection but can trap the maker when the basis genuinely disappears.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it defends a present commitment against the maker's own predictable future weakness — temptation, fear, short-term pressure — which is exactly the failure that reputation and after-the-fact remedies cannot reach.[n1] It converts "trust me" into "I have arranged things so I can't."
Its central failure mode is the mirror of its strength: the same rigidity that makes it credible turns dangerous when the world changes. A precommitment run to the extreme becomes coercive rigidity — a commitment that survives after its legitimate basis has disappeared, forcing silent breach or trapping the owner. The classic misuse is a device installed with no honest release rule, or one dressed up as self-binding while actually binding others. The discipline that guards against this is to pair every device with an explicit, legitimate exit and to keep the revocation window open exactly where re-examination is warranted — so the device shuts the door on backsliding, not on changed circumstances.
