Example

A production potter throws stoneware mugs. The reflex of the trade is to sponge every surface smooth so the pieces read as machine-made and "clean." Instead she adopts a retention rule. The spiral throwing rings inside the mug stay — they show it was thrown by hand and give the thumb some grip. The maker's thumbprint at the handle join stays. A kiln-kiss, where two pieces touched during firing, is kept and quietly noted rather than ground off. When a mug cracks in the bisque, she mends it with kintsugi — gold-filled lacquer that advertises the repair instead of hiding it, in the spirit of wabi-sabi.[n1] Each kept mark tells the buyer this is hand-made, here is the process, here is the honest history including the mended break; and the slow crazing of the glaze over years is declared in advance as expected, not a fault. The object carries its own making as visible provenance.

How it works

The procedure works through a keep-list. For each type of mark, it asks whether the trace clarifies process or provenance — keep — or is merely noise or a genuine defect — remove. The informative marks are retained deliberately, not left by neglect. Where a mark is a repair or an age trace, the procedure attaches an explicit policy that treats it as honest history rather than damage. The result is a finished object whose surface documents its own fabrication and repair — distinct from a cutaway, which sections a specimen, and from a review, which only judges.

Tuning parameters

  • Retention selectivity — which marks are kept versus cleaned; keep too many and the object reads as sloppy rather than honest.
