Progress Marker Board¶
Visible-progress artifact — instantiates Active Goal Shielding
Keeps the focal goal winning by making its progress visible and rewarding — a live scoreboard that renews motivation each time you glance at it.
A Progress Marker Board is a shared, always-visible display of how far the focal goal has come and how far remains — a burndown chart, a filled thermometer, a streak calendar, a wall of moved cards. Its job in shielding is motivational rather than defensive: it keeps the current goal winning the competition for attention by making its progress salient and rewarding every time anyone looks, so the goal renews its own pull instead of decaying as novelty fades. Its distinguishing move is turning invisible, easily-forgotten progress into a standing signal — and tying that signal to identity ("we are a team that ships," "I don't break the chain"), so a glance at the board both informs and re-commits.
Example¶
A community library runs a spring campaign for a new children's wing. Early on the goal is abstract and easily crowded out by everyone's day-to-day, and pledges trickle. So they stand a ten-foot wooden thermometer in the lobby, fill it in as gifts land, and paint the target line and a banner naming why the wing matters. Now every visible jump — a local business match, a school bake sale — pulls the next gift into view.
Donors near the top give harder as the red climbs toward the line; volunteers who might have drifted to other causes stay because the board makes this goal's momentum the one they can actually see. The board blocks nothing and forbids nothing; it simply keeps out-competing rival demands on attention by being the most rewarding thing in the room to check.
How it works¶
- Choose a single headline metric that genuinely tracks the goal — not a vanity proxy — and render it as a quantity that visibly moves.
- Make it ambient and public: it must be seen without being sought, and ideally seen by everyone whose attention the goal is competing for.
- Show remaining distance, not just accumulated total, so the pull toward the finish line stays live even late in the effort.
- Tie the marker to a "why" — the value or identity the goal serves — so each update recruits commitment, not merely information.
Tuning parameters¶
- Metric choice — what the board counts. A true outcome metric motivates honestly; a gameable proxy invites the board to be "satisfied" while the goal is not.
- Granularity and cadence — how often the marker moves. Frequent small increments sustain momentum; rare big jumps risk long flat stretches where the signal goes quiet.
- Visibility — private nudge, team wall, or fully public. More public raises motivation and social commitment, but also stakes and pressure.
- Framing — progress made, distance remaining, or streak preserved. Each recruits a different drive: accomplishment, urgency near the finish, or the loss-aversion of a broken chain.
- Identity coupling — how hard the board leans on "who we are." Strong identity framing deepens commitment but can make an honest miss feel like a failure of self.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it fixes the specific weakness that makes an active goal fragile: its rewards are often distant while rivals offer immediate ones. A visible marker supplies frequent, cheap, present rewards for staying the course, and near the finish the goal-gradient effect makes the pull strongest exactly when fatigue is highest.[n1]
Its failure modes follow from the fact that a board motivates whatever it measures. A poorly chosen metric quietly redirects effort toward the number rather than the goal — a team "improves" its burndown by cutting scope instead of finishing. Public boards can shade from motivating into shaming, and an identity-heavy board can make a necessary re-scoping feel like a betrayal. The classic misuse is the board kept alive to look productive — a dashboard for the audience rather than a signal for the doer, updated to reassure rather than to steer. The discipline that guards against it is to pick a metric you would still trust if no one were watching, and to let the board report bad news as readily as good.
How it implements the components¶
progress_feedback_signal— the board is the signal: it converts accumulated progress into a visible, repeated cue that the focal goal is moving.identity_or_value_anchor— by naming the goal's "why" alongside the metric, the board ties each glance to the value or identity the goal serves, renewing commitment rather than only reporting status.
It does not reserve the time in which progress is made (goal_protection_window) — that is Protected Goal Window Schedule — nor hold the list of rival goals being deferred (competing_goal_inventory); that inventory is Competing-Goal Parking Lot.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Monitoring, Sensing & Alerting
Rationale: The live scoreboard repeatedly presents actual progress and remaining distance so drift and movement toward the focal goal stay visible.
Nearest alternative: Interface, Display & Cue — The board is a perceptual surface, but its continuously updated actual-state observation makes it Monitoring under the taxonomy.
Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Psychology
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Progress Marker Board is most plausibly rooted in the psychology tradition because its characteristic form depends on individual cognition, motivation, judgment, and behavior. The assignment tracks that formative lineage, not the many settings in which the mechanism can now be applied.
Related originating lineages:
- Human-Computer Interaction — The human_computer_interaction tradition materially shaped Progress Marker Board through its own practice of interface disclosure, user guidance, interaction design, and cognitive load.
- Organizational & Management Science — The organizational_management tradition materially shaped Progress Marker Board through its own practice of the coordination, governance, learning, and redesign of organized work.
Review resolution: Both blind reviewers agree that psychology is the primary origin. Explicit reconciliation resolves reported ambiguity, domain reach disagreement. Formative alternate lineages are retained as human_computer_interaction, organizational_management; later breadth of use is recorded separately as domain_reach=universal, while origin_mode=cross_disciplinary_synthesis describes the relationship among origin lineages.
Attribution caveat: The exact encyclopedia label appears to synthesize established practices; the primary domain identifies the strongest formative lineage, while the alternates record material ingredients rather than downstream uses. The board generalizes motivational and visual-management practices rather than naming a single historical mechanism.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.
Notes¶
A board raises the focal goal's pull but does nothing to lower a rival's. It complements, and cannot replace, the suppression-side mechanisms — blackout, friction, parking. A goal that is losing on the merits will not be rescued by a prettier scoreboard.
[n1] The goal-gradient effect: effort intensifies as one gets closer to a goal. It was characterized in Clark Hull's early learning experiments and later observed in human reward-program behavior; because visible proximity to the target is itself motivating, showing remaining distance — not just accumulated total — is what keeps the effect working late in an effort. ↩
