Progressive Friction¶
Protocol — instantiates Compounding Control
Makes additional accumulation increasingly costly or review-heavy as the compounding variable approaches a dangerous range.
Progressive Friction is a graduated resistance that stays near-zero in the safe range and climbs steeply as a compounding variable nears its danger zone — so the closer the system gets to runaway, the more each additional increment costs. Its defining move is that the friction is a function of proximity to the threshold, not a flat gate: unlike a fixed cap that is invisible until it slams shut, progressive friction is felt increasingly on the way up, converting a cliff into a rising slope that self-brakes. It leaves ordinary activity untouched, applies gentle drag as an early-warning band is entered, and grows to a near-prohibitive review burden right before the runaway threshold — with a governed exception route for the rare legitimate case that must push through.
Example¶
A messaging platform notices that a certain kind of content — a rumor, a scam, a viral hoax — spreads by re-forwarding: each recipient forwards to many, who forward to many more, the classic runaway. A flat ban would catch too much; doing nothing lets the multiplier run. So the platform makes the act of forwarding itself progressively costly as a message shows signs of virality. A message forwarded a few times moves freely. Once it has been forwarded down a long chain — flagged "frequently forwarded," the early-warning band — the interface begins to add friction: it can be forwarded to fewer people at once, an extra tap is required, a "you didn't write this" label appears. As the forward-count climbs toward the runaway range, the friction tightens further, to a single chat at a time. A verified public-health account that genuinely needs to broadcast can apply for an exemption through a governed review. The everyday user forwarding a birthday note feels nothing; the runaway chain hits rising drag exactly where it would otherwise explode.
How it works¶
- Track proximity to the threshold. An early-warning signal measures how close the compounding variable is to its danger range (forward depth, accumulation velocity), which sets the friction level.
- Scale resistance with proximity. Friction is a rising function of that distance — near-zero when safe, steep near the threshold — so each further increment costs progressively more.
- Keep the safe range frictionless. Below the warning band, ordinary activity is untouched, so the control is invisible to the many and felt only by the runaway few.
- Route legitimate breakthroughs through exception governance. A defined review lets a warranted actor exceed the friction under scrutiny, so the graduation is not an absolute wall.
Tuning parameters¶
- Friction curve steepness — how sharply resistance rises with proximity. Steep brakes runaway hard near the threshold but can feel punitive just below it; gentle is smoother but may not bite in time.
- Onset point — where in the range friction begins. Early onset gives a long, gentle slope but taxes near-normal activity; late onset spares normal use but leaves a shorter runway to brake a fast climb.
- Friction form — whether the added cost is delay, effort, expense, or mandatory review. Review catches intent but is slow and human-costly; delay/effort scales cheaply but is blunter.
- Exception breadth — how readily the governed override is granted. Generous protects legitimate broadcasters but can be gamed; strict preserves the control but may throttle warranted use.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is proportionality: because friction tracks proximity, it leaves the vast benign majority alone while braking exactly the trajectories heading for runaway, and it self-brakes on the way up instead of relying on a single hard line noticed only in the breach. It turns a cliff into a slope the system climbs against rising resistance.[n1]
Its central failure mode is threshold gaming: because the friction is a known function of an observable variable, actors split accumulation into sub-threshold chunks — many small forwards, many small accounts, many small transactions — that never trip the rising cost, the structuring move that defeats any bright-line-adjacent control. A related misuse is mis-tuning the onset so the friction lands on legitimate power users (a real broadcaster, a heavy-but-benign account) as if they were the runaway. The guarding discipline is to meter the aggregate compounding variable rather than a per-event count, so fragmentation still accrues friction, and to reserve the exception route for genuinely warranted volume.
