Proximity Sensor Activation¶
Responsive sensing system — instantiates Viewer Participation and Embodied Interpretation
Wires the work to sense a viewer's approach and answer as they near it, so distance itself — how close you come, whether you advance or retreat — becomes the interpretive variable.
Proximity Sensor Activation gives the work a sensing layer — infrared, ultrasonic, a capacitive field, a depth camera — that detects a body's presence and nearness and drives a response, with no touch or deliberate gesture required. Merely being near, and moving toward or away, is the input; the work answers continuously along that gradient. Its defining move, against its sensor-family sibling, is that it reads distance without contact: an ambient, uncommitted relationship in which approaching, lingering, and retreating are themselves the interpretive acts. Where a touch trigger asks the viewer to commit their body, a proximity layer responds to the fact of the body simply being there.
Example¶
A transit hall lines one long corridor with a wall of faint light and low sound that, at rest, barely registers. As a lone commuter walks it, the wall brightens and warms toward her and dims behind, as if attending to her passage; slow down and it pools around you, hurry and it thins. At rush hour, with the corridor full, the individual responses merge into a single saturated field that tracks the crowd as one body — turning an abstract theme of being noticed and being one of many into something felt as you move. No plaque explains it; the reading comes entirely from how the wall answers approach. The response thresholds are set to body-scaled distance zones: it wakes at roughly social distance and intensifies as you cross into the personal.
How it works¶
- Sense presence and distance. Detectors convert nearness and motion — not contact, not a named gesture — into a live signal of where bodies are relative to the work.
- Map distance to response as a gradient. Approach and retreat drive a continuous answer, so the gradient is the medium and the viewer can steer it by moving.
- Fold many bodies into one field. When several people are in range the layer can sum their presence, so a crowd produces a shared, readable state rather than competing individual triggers.
Tuning parameters¶
- Detection range and threshold — how far out the work begins to answer; the dial between reacting to the whole room and responding only to an intimate approach.
- Response gradient shape — linear, steep, or stepped mapping of distance to effect; how legibly the act of approaching reads.
- Latency and smoothing — how quickly it answers; too twitchy feels glitchy, too slow feels dead.
- Single versus aggregate — whether it tracks the nearest body or the crowd's summed presence, which decides whether the piece is about you or about everyone.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is making presence, approach, and retreat the medium: it needs no instruction, works for the hesitant and the unaware, and can render relational or temporal abstractions — being watched, drawing near, crowding — directly in the body. Its failure modes are the novelty trap, where people wave to make it react and stop reading any meaning, and the brittleness of sensing itself: false triggers, dead zones, and the discomfort of a work that watches people who never opted in. The classic misuse is exactly that inversion — deploying the sensing for foot-traffic analytics or targeted marketing under the cover of art. The discipline is to bind the response to meaning, disclose that sensing is happening, and leave an un-sensed path for those who decline.[n1]

The ethical edge is that a proximity layer senses people who did not choose to participate — presence is captured whether or not the viewer consents. A work that uses it responsibly discloses the sensing and pairs it with a refusable, un-sensed route, so being read by the piece is an invitation rather than a trap.
