The Rapid Response Playbook is a preauthorized decision-and-action sequence that fires the moment a signal confirms early establishment — triage the entrant against a feasibility threshold, confirm it, act locally, escalate across boundaries, communicate, and capture what was learned. Its defining idea is preauthorization: decision rights, response tiers, and communication templates are agreed before the incident, so a warning becomes a governed action within hours instead of sitting idle in an approval queue while the entrant crosses the establishment threshold. It is the coordination-and-decision layer of containment — it neither detects the entrant nor designs the physical barriers, but it is what turns detection and barriers into a timely, coordinated move.
Example¶
On a large online platform, a sentinel flags a new scam pattern — fake "refund" accounts draining payouts — spreading faster than the fraud classifiers can learn it. The playbook runs. Triage: the pattern is bounded to one new signup route and its accounts are still enumerable, so it clears the eradication-feasibility threshold — contain and remove rather than merely watch. Confirm: an analyst validates twenty sampled accounts against the signature. Act locally: a preauthorized hold is applied to payouts on matching accounts. Escalate: the signup-pathway owner, legal, and communications are paged along a named ladder. Communicate: a user-facing notice and an internal incident channel go out from templates. Learn: a blameless post-incident review turns the signature into a durable classifier rule.
From alarm to contained in a single shift — because nobody had to invent the authority to act while the entrant was still spreading.
How it works¶
The distinctive machinery is the preauthorization envelope. A triage tree, centered on the eradication-feasibility question — is the entrant local, observable, and removable, or already distributed and embedded? — routes each case to watch, suppress, contain, eradicate, or tolerate. An escalation ladder names owners across the seams the entrant will exploit, so response is not fragmented by team, jurisdiction, or product surface. Communication templates are pre-drafted. And post-action learning is a required terminal step, not an optional afterthought, so each incident hardens the response for the next. The workflow's value is that all of this is decided in calm, then executed under pressure.
Tuning parameters¶
- Preauthorization scope — how much action is pre-approved versus needing fresh sign-off. Wider scope is faster but raises the cost of a misfire.
- Triage thresholds — what evidence tier trips which response tier, trading speed against the risk of over- or under-reacting.
- Escalation breadth — who gets paged, and how early; a wide ladder coordinates well but generates noise and fatigue.
- Communication posture — silent containment versus public notice, trading candor against tipping off the entrant or the crowd.
- Learning-loop rigor — a mandatory blameless review versus a skippable write-up, trading throughput against durable improvement.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it collapses the fatal gap between warning and action — the failure in which early alerts sit unhandled until the entrant is a regime.
