A Re-grounding Review Cadence is a recurring, calendar-and-trigger-driven appointment at which an abstraction must re-earn its authority. Its defining idea is that validity expires: an abstraction grounded against a substrate in 2022 is not automatically grounded in 2025, because the population, the measurement regime, or the meaning of the thing may have moved underneath it. A national statistics agency maintains the basket of goods behind its consumer price index — an abstraction that steers pensions, wage negotiations, and central-bank policy. Left alone, the basket silently drifts out of correspondence with how people actually spend: it once weighted landline telephony heavily and streaming not at all. A Re-grounding Review Cadence puts the basket on an explicit clock — a scheduled multi-year requalification, plus triggers for large consumption shifts.
At the review, the basket is compared against fresh household-expenditure surveys. How it works¶

- Issue a whole-abstraction disposition. Choose one: keep as-is, recalibrate, demote to advisory, or retire — a verdict on the abstraction's continued authority, dated and owned.
- Enact and preserve continuity. Carry the disposition into force and document any linking, so a recalibrated or retired abstraction doesn't silently break everything downstream.
The distinguishing discipline is scheduled requalification: it is the clock that guarantees an abstraction is periodically forced to re-justify itself, independent of whether anyone has noticed a problem.
Tuning parameters¶
- Interval length — how often the scheduled review fires. Frequent requalification keeps abstractions fresh but taxes the org and can destabilize a comparable series; long intervals let staleness accumulate.
- Trigger sensitivity — how large a context change pulls a review forward off-schedule. Sensitive triggers catch fast shifts but generate off-cycle work; dull ones miss regime changes.
- Disposition default — whether an abstraction is presumed still valid unless the review overturns it, or must affirmatively re-earn authority each cycle. Affirmative re-earning is stricter but heavier.
- Continuity policy — how aggressively to preserve comparability when recalibrating (linking, dual-running) versus a clean break. More continuity protects downstream users but can hide the size of the correction.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it defeats stale-authority reliance — the failure where an abstraction keeps its power simply because re-grounding is more work than reuse. By making requalification a standing appointment, it converts "someone should recheck this eventually" into a dated, owned decision, and it is the only sibling that routinely puts retire on the table. It is the organizational answer to concept drift, the gradual change in the underlying relationships that quietly invalidates a once-good model.[n1]
It misleads when the cadence becomes a rubber-stamp: a review that fires on schedule but always returns "still valid" without genuinely re-grounding is a ritual that manufactures false freshness. A poorly-sized interval is its own trap — too long and the substrate has moved a regime by the time anyone looks; too short and constant recalibration destroys the comparability that made the abstraction useful. The classic misuse is scheduling the review but severing access to fresh substrate, so the "re-grounding" checks the abstraction against its own past outputs. The guarding discipline is to size the interval to the substrate's real rate of change, require the review to consult current evidence, and keep retire a live option rather than a taboo.
