A Relapse Prevention Plan is built for the situation after a harmful loop has already been interrupted, when the danger is not that the behavior restarts automatically but that a fragile new state slides back under stress. Its defining move is to treat the lapse — a single slip — as a distinct, planned-for event separate from relapse, the full return of the pattern, and to insert graded support at the high-risk states so the first does not become the second. Example

Someone six weeks into quitting smoking has already done the loop-level work — the cigarettes are gone, the after-coffee routine has been rebuilt. The remaining risk is the predictable rough patch: a stressful week, a night out with old friends who smoke, the emotional low that used to be a reliable trigger. The plan names these high-risk states explicitly and, for each, writes down the earliest move: text a specific person before the party, carry a rehearsed line to decline, leave a stressful setting for ten minutes. It also writes a lapse script that is used if one cigarette happens — what to do in the next hour so a single slip is not read as total failure and does not become "well, I've blown it, back to a pack a day." Weekly check-ins hold the new non-smoking state steady while it is still fragile. When the stressful week actually arrives, the pre-written response fires early, the low passes without a lapse, and the recovery holds through exactly the moment that used to end it.

How it works

  • Enumerate high-risk states in advance. Identify the specific emotional, social, and situational states where a lapse is most likely — the vulnerable windows — while calm, not mid-crisis.
  • Pre-load the earliest response. For each state, write the concrete first move that fires before a lapse, so the person is executing a plan rather than improvising under pressure.
  • Write a lapse-to-relapse firebreak. Define what to do in the hour after a slip so a single lapse is contained and reframed, not catastrophized into a full return.
  • Hold the new state with ongoing support. Keep light, regular support in place through the fragile period so the recovery has time to become normal.

Tuning parameters

  • Risk-state coverage — how many vulnerable situations the plan anticipates. Broad coverage catches more but can overwhelm; a focused plan is usable but blind to the unlisted trigger.
  • Response earliness — how far ahead of the actual lapse the pre-loaded move fires. Earlier is safer but demands vigilance; later is easier to sustain but leaves less margin.
  • Lapse-plan leniency — how forgiving the firebreak is. Too harsh feeds the all-or-nothing spiral; too lenient can normalize slips into drift.
  • Support intensity and taper — how much ongoing support, and how fast it is withdrawn. Slower taper protects the fragile state longer but risks dependence on the support itself.
  • Self- vs. supported monitoring — whether the person tracks their own risk states or a helper does. Self-tracking preserves agency; supported tracking catches denial but can feel like surveillance.
