Research Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria¶
Protocol — instantiates System Scope Definition
Protocol criteria specifying which participants, cases, studies, observations, or evidence sources are included or excluded.
Research Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria fix the evidence boundary of a study. Their defining concern is validity of the evidence base, decided before the data is seen: the criteria are pre-registered rules stating which participants, cases, studies, or observations count as inside the study, which are screened out and why, and — through a formal amendment process — how those rules may change once the study is under way. What makes this mechanism itself, and not its siblings, is that its inclusion and exclusion rules gate evidence, and its review is a documented protocol amendment, not a project milestone or a legal appeal. The point of drawing the line up front is that the boundary cannot later be redrawn silently to flatter the result.
Example¶
A team runs a systematic review of studies on a phonics reading method, and the credibility of the whole review rests on which studies they let in. The protocol states its inclusion rules before any searching begins: randomized or quasi-experimental designs, pupils in grades K–2, published from 2005 onward, in English, reporting a standardized reading-score outcome. It states its exclusions with reasons: single-case reports (not generalizable), non-peer-reviewed sources (unvetted), samples under thirty (underpowered), and studies that bundle phonics with an unrelated intervention (confounded). Midway, too few studies qualify — so the team relaxes the year cutoff to 2000, but only through a logged amendment that records the change and its justification, visible to any later reader.
The outcome is a reproducible evidence base: the question "which studies did you actually count, and did you move the goalposts?" has a documented, defensible answer, and any selection pressure is on the record rather than hidden in the analysis.
How it works¶
- Pre-specify inclusion rules — the positive membership conditions for the evidence base, set before outcomes are known.
- Pre-specify exclusions with reasons — each screen-out justified, so the boundary is testable rather than arbitrary.
- Screen against the criteria, ideally with the outcome data blinded, so eligibility decisions can't be steered by whether a case helps the hypothesis.
- Amend only through the logged review process — the distinctive step: criteria may move, but every move is recorded, dated, and justified.
Tuning parameters¶
- Criteria strictness — narrow high-validity eligibility vs. broad generalizable eligibility; narrow strengthens internal validity but shrinks and specializes the sample.
- Pre-registration rigor — how firmly criteria are locked before data collection; firmer locking curbs cherry-picking but reduces adaptivity.
- Amendment threshold — how freely criteria may be revised mid-study; a permissive threshold aids feasibility but erodes the guarantee of a fixed boundary.
- Screening blinding — whether screeners see outcomes while judging eligibility; blinding protects against bias but complicates logistics.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is protecting validity and reproducibility: a stated, pre-registered evidence boundary is what lets others trust and repeat the study.
Its failure mode is criteria gerrymandered after the fact — quietly tightened or loosened until the surviving evidence supports a desired conclusion, a route to selection bias.[n1] The mirror-image misuse is over-narrow criteria that yield a pristine but unrepresentative sample with weak external validity. The guarding discipline is pre-registration plus an auditable amendment log, so any change to the boundary is visible and dated rather than silently absorbed into the analysis.
How it implements the components¶
Research Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria fill the evidence-boundary components — the study-validity side of the archetype:

It gates observations, not deliverables: acceptance-level measurement_scope for committed work is Project Scope Statement's (which shares the inclusion/exclusion vocabulary but bounds work, not evidence). It does not derive a representation's assumption_boundary (Model Boundary Definition), nor lay out an owner-and-handoff responsibility_map or the interface_identification of who runs which study step (Operational Responsibility Map).
