Research Question Workshop¶
Facilitation process — instantiates Curiosity Gap Design
Transforms vague interest into an explicit, answerable, relevant knowledge gap and a manageable first investigation.
Teams often have a sense that something is worth looking into without a question sharp enough to act on. Research Question Workshop is the facilitated session that manufactures that question: it takes a fog of "we should understand X better" and drives it, as a group, down to one explicit, answerable, relevant gap plus a scoped first investigation. Its defining move is collaborative sharpening under filters — many candidate unknowns are surfaced, each tested against whether it can actually be answered and whether it matters, and the group converges on one they own. It differs from a provocative question prompt (a single author's one-shot sentence) and from a discovery task (which runs an activity): this produces no artifact and no data, only a well-formed question and a committed next probe — but it produces them with shared buy-in that a solo prompt can't.
Example¶
A public-health NGO keeps saying "something's off with vaccine uptake in the eastern district," but three meetings have circled without traction. A half-day workshop is run. The group first diverges — listing every unknown they can name: is it supply, trust, distance, clinic hours, the reminder system? Each candidate is then held to two tests: could we actually answer this with data we can get, and would the answer change what we do. "Do people distrust vaccines in general" fails the first test (too broad to answer, too broad to act on). It gets sharpened to something that passes both: "Between clinic registration and the second dose, which single step loses the most people, and is it distance or scheduling?" The group then scopes it — one district, the last six months — and names a manageable first probe: pull the appointment and dosing logs from three clinics and reconstruct the drop-off funnel. They leave with a question they all own and a Monday-morning first move, not another round of circling.
How it works¶
- Diverge first. Surface many candidate unknowns before judging any, so the sharpest gap isn't crowded out by the first one voiced.
- Filter for answerable and relevant. Test each candidate against whether it can be investigated with reachable evidence and whether its answer would change a decision — the two filters that separate a live question from an idle one.
- Converge to one. Pick the single gap that best passes both filters and phrase it explicitly, as a question the whole group can repeat back.
- Scope and assign a first probe. Bound the investigation (which population, which window) and name the concrete first move, so the workshop ends pointed at action rather than at admiration of a nicely worded question.
Tuning parameters¶
- Divergence breadth — how many candidates are surfaced before filtering. Broader search finds sharper gaps but costs time.
- Relevance-filter strictness — how hard the "would it change what we do" test bites. Stricter yields more actionable questions but can prune genuinely interesting tangents.
- Scoping tightness — how narrowly the first investigation is bounded. Tighter is more manageable but can shave off the tension that made the gap interesting.
- Facilitation directiveness — how much the facilitator steers convergence. More steering is faster but dilutes group ownership.
- Group composition — who's in the room. Broader expertise surfaces better candidates but slows consensus.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is killing the vague "let's explore X" and replacing it with a shared, investigable question that a team actually believes in — the buy-in is what a solo prompt cannot manufacture. The two filters echo established rules for what makes a research question worth pursuing: feasible, interesting, novel, ethical, and relevant.[1]
Its failure mode is analysis paralysis — the group falls in love with refining the question and never commits to investigating it, so the workshop becomes a substitute for inquiry rather than its start. A subtler failure is over-narrowing until the question is answerable but no longer carries the tension that made anyone curious. The classic misuse is the manager who convenes "question workshops" to look inquisitive while actually deferring a decision — pseudo-curiosity as avoidance. The guarding discipline is to timebox to a committed first probe: a workshop that ends without a named next action, owner, and date has failed regardless of how elegant the question reads.
