Residual Explanation Review¶
Review protocol — instantiates Part-Level Explanatory Reduction
Reviews what the part-level account failed to explain and decides whether the residual is emergent, contextual, or a cue to escape reduction.
Every reduction leaves something over — a gap between what the parts explain and what the whole actually does — and the tempting move is to file that gap under "noise" and move on. The Residual Explanation Review refuses that move. It takes the leftover, the part the reconstruction could not account for, and interrogates it for meaning: is this residual measurement error, or is it a genuine emergent property, a downward-causal effect, a piece of erased context, or a signal that the chosen part level is simply the wrong level for this whole? Its defining move is deliberative rather than computational — it does not measure how big the residual is (a sensitivity test already did that) but judges what kind of thing it is and, on that basis, decides whether the reductive account is still sufficient or whether the honest next step is to escape to a higher-level, plural, or holistic explanation.
Example¶
A city's analysts explain a sudden spike in a neighborhood's crime rate through a clean part-level model: individual offenders, their opportunities, and local routine activity. The model reconstructs most of the month-to-month variation — but a stubborn residual remains, a chunk of the spike the individual-level account cannot touch. A naïve team would call it noise and publish. The Residual Explanation Review instead puts the residual on the table and asks what it is.
Walking through it, the review finds the residual is not random: it tracks the closure of a community center and a change in policing policy — institution-level, contextual factors that the individual-part model had erased by construction. That is a decisive finding. The residual is not error; it is evidence that a purely individual reduction is insufficient for this whole, and that explanation must escape upward to include institutional and contextual causes. The review does not discard the part-level model — it remains valid for what it explains — but it records the residual as real, names the holism escape condition that has now been met, and hands the whole-level question to a pluralistic account. The reduction stops exactly where it stops being enough.
How it works¶
- Isolate the residual. Take the unexplained remainder from a reconstruction test and treat it as an object of study rather than a leftover to be minimized.
- Classify it. Sort the residual among candidate kinds — measurement error, emergent property, downward causation, erased context, or wrong-level selection — using its structure (does it correlate with something the parts omit?).
- Check the escape condition. Decide whether the residual is material: large enough, structured enough, or ethically important enough that the reductive account can no longer be called sufficient.
- Route the verdict. If material, declare the sufficiency claim broken for this whole and escalate to a higher-level or plural explanation; if not, record it as a bounded, tolerated residual.
Tuning parameters¶
- Materiality threshold — how large or structured a residual must be before it triggers escape. A low threshold protects against emergence erasure but can abandon a useful reduction prematurely; a high one is decisive but risks dismissing real signal.
- Residual taxonomy — how many kinds of residual you distinguish. A rich taxonomy diagnoses precisely but demands evidence to assign each category; a coarse one is fast but blunt.
- Evidence bar for "noise" — how much you must show before calling a residual random. A high bar guards against the lazy noise verdict but slows the review.
- Stakes weighting — how much moral or political importance shifts the threshold. In social and policy domains, context-erasing residuals warrant a lower bar for escalation.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the archetype's conscience: it is the one mechanism whose whole job is to keep a reduction honest about its own limits, catching the emergent, contextual, and downward-causal effects that a confident part-level account is built to ignore. It is required whenever reconstruction is incomplete or the domain is ethically loaded, because that is exactly when a residual is most likely to be quietly discarded.
Its failure mode is emergence erasure: dismissing a structured residual as noise because it does not fit the reduction — the very error the review exists to prevent, which creeps back in when the materiality bar is set to protect a favored model. The mirror-image misuse is residual mysticism: reaching for "emergence" as a label the moment anything is unexplained, treating every gap as proof of irreducible holism rather than as a prompt to look harder at the parts. The touchstone here is the recognition that "more is different"[1] — that some whole-level properties genuinely are not readable off the parts — held in tension with the discipline of proving a residual is structured before elevating it. The guarding discipline is to demand that a residual be shown to correlate with something the parts omit before either dismissing it or escalating.
How it implements the components¶
Residual Explanation Review fills the honesty-and-escape side of the archetype:

It also does NOT implement scope_and_level_boundary or cross_level_context_note — that's Scope Clause and Exception Note, its nearest twin: the Scope Clause documents where the reduction stays valid for downstream users, while this review decides whether the residual forces abandoning reduction altogether.*
