Students flag which technique is at work and rate whether the post is trustworthy. The teacher reads the result not as a grade but as a map: the class reliably catches urgency but misses false authority, and one cluster of students still rates manipulative posts as credible. That readout tells her exactly which cue to re-teach and to whom — something a satisfied "we covered it" never could.
How it works¶
What distinguishes it from an ordinary knowledge test:
- Transfer items, not recall items. Questions are drawn from outside the training set, so the quiz measures whether the skill generalizes rather than whether examples were memorized.
- Pre/post framing. A baseline before and a retest after isolate the inoculation's actual effect from what learners already knew.
- Decomposed readout. Scores break down by tactic (which cues land) and by person or segment (who is still exposed), not a single pass/fail number.
- Repeatable. Re-running it over time surfaces decay, signalling when a booster is due.
Tuning parameters¶
- Transfer distance — how far items sit from the trained examples (near paraphrase versus novel domain); farther tests real generalization but can under-credit partial learning.
- Pre/post design — baseline-then-retest versus post-only; a baseline isolates the effect but doubles administration.
- Stakes — anonymous formative check versus graded or certifying; higher stakes sharpen attention but invite gaming and teaching-to-the-test.
- Readout granularity — a single score versus per-tactic, per-segment breakdown; finer readouts direct re-teaching but take longer to build.
- Cadence — one-shot versus periodic re-probing, to catch decay before it matters.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is turning "we ran a training" into evidence of whether it worked and for whom. Its transfer items expose the gap between recognizing familiar examples and genuinely resisting new ones — the difference between near and far transfer of learning[n1] — and its per-segment readout is what lets scarce follow-up land where the vulnerability actually is.
It misleads when its items resemble the training set: then it measures recall, everyone passes, and the program is flattered — the textbook "teaching to the test." Used punitively, it drives gaming and hides the very vulnerability it should reveal. And it can certify recognition on paper while real-world resistance under emotional pressure goes untested. The classic misuse is running it to manufacture a reassuring pass rate for a report — scored on familiar items so the number looks good. The discipline is to hold out genuinely novel transfer items, keep stakes low enough for an honest signal, and treat a low score as the finding, not the failure.
