A rest/recovery period is a protected window of genuine off-load during which an organism or person does the one thing that actually drains fatigue: recover. How it works¶

- Duration — how long the window is. Longer restores more fully but costs availability; too short and the reservoir never returns to baseline.
- Quality vs. mere time — how hard the conditions for real recovery are protected (dark, quiet, uninterrupted). High-quality rest recovers faster per hour but takes deliberate protection.
- Return ramp — how gently load resumes afterward. A gradual ramp guards a freshly recovered system; a steep one wastes the recovery it just banked.
- Recovery signal used — what tells you the period is complete (subjective readiness, resting heart-rate variability, sleep obtained). Objective signals resist wishful "I'm fine."
- Frequency — how often full recovery windows recur relative to load.
