Revision Decision Memo¶
A decision document — instantiates Social Reality Construction Audit
Converts the audit's findings into an explicit, recorded choice — preserve, revise, rename, split, retire, or govern — with the reasons, the legitimacy verdict, and the disagreements that remain unresolved.
A Revision Decision Memo is the artifact that closes the audit. It states which path was chosen from the preserve / revise / retire / split / merge / rename / govern menu and why, records the legitimacy-and-stability verdict the choice rests on, and — distinctively — logs the disagreements that were not resolved, so the decision is honest about its contested basis. It is the only sibling that produces a commitment: the point of the archetype is to end with a decision path, not with the observation that something is socially constructed, and this memo is where that decision is fixed and owned.
Example¶
A museum must decide what to do with the label "primitive art" attached to its African and Oceanic collections. The audit is complete, and the memo records the decision: retire "primitive," adopt period- and region-specific labels, add provenance context, and govern future labeling through a standing review. It states the reasons — the term encodes a discredited developmental hierarchy — and the legitimacy verdict: the old label fails the fairness-and-usefulness test. Crucially, it records the unresolved disagreement, that curators split on whether to note the historical label at all and who holds each view. The memo is the artifact the institution can now be held to. Its whole function is to treat the category as authored and revisable rather than let it stand as natural fact — the opposite of reification.[1]
How it works¶
The distinguishing discipline is to decide, justify, and record the residue:
- Take the findings and options — from the audits and the alternative-frame set.
- Choose a path — one explicit selection from the preserve-to-retire menu, with an owner.
- Attach the legitimacy reasoning — the fairness, usefulness, and governability verdict that justifies the choice.
- Record the unresolved disagreements — who dissents and on what, so the decision's contested basis stays visible.
It decides and documents; it does not perform the change or re-run the analysis.
Tuning parameters¶
- Decision granularity — one verdict for the whole category versus a path per sub-case (preserve here, retire there).
- Reason transparency — a bare decision versus a full rationale and evidence trail. More transparency makes the memo contestable and durable.
- Dissent handling — suppress disagreement for a clean mandate versus record it faithfully. Recording costs tidiness but prevents a false consensus that unravels later.
- Revisit trigger — whether the memo sets the conditions under which the decision is reopened.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is forcing the audit to land as a choice with an owner, and its dissent log keeps a contested decision honest instead of papering over a split. Its classic misuse is the one every decision document invites: written after the choice to manufacture a justification for something already decided, rather than to test it. A related failure is the too-clean memo that buries the disagreement and so detonates later when the losing side never actually consented. The discipline that guards against both is to record the dissent and the revisit conditions, and to draft the memo as a test of the choice rather than a laundering of it.

Revision Decision Memo realizes the decision side of the archetype — it converts findings into a committed, justified, honestly-contested choice:

It does not gather the perceptions or map the machinery behind the finding (those belong to the audit mechanisms — Culture Survey, Institutional Analysis), nor execute the change in live systems (implementation_revision_pathway → Taxonomy or Form Revision).

Decision and execution are deliberately split: the memo decides, Taxonomy or Form Revision implements. Keeping them separate lets a team change the rollout plan without re-opening the decision, and change the decision without silently rewriting live systems.

[1] Reification, in Berger and Luckmann's sense, is apprehending human-made social products as if they were facts of nature, so people forget they are the authors of their own social world.
