A pre-committed circuit-breaker that halts the climb at a danger threshold and locks the top rungs behind a deliberate authority gate — so no one crosses into catastrophe on momentum or by mistake.
Safe Stop Trigger is a fail-safe that fires an automatic halt when a pre-set danger condition is met and gates the highest rungs behind a separate, deliberate authorization. Its defining idea is that it removes the top of the ladder from the heat of the moment: crossing the last rungs requires a second key and a forced pause, so escalation cannot run away on momentum, on autopilot, or on a single actor's impulse. Example¶
A security operations center runs an automated response ladder against intrusions: rate-limit the source, then block its address, then quarantine the affected host, then isolate a network segment, and — at the top — sever the production segment from the internet. That last rung would stop almost any attacker, but it would also take down customer-facing services, so it must never fire on autopilot. The Safe Stop Trigger wires two controls onto it. A circuit-breaker halts the automated playbook the moment it is about to reach the "sever production" rung and pages a human instead of executing. And an authority interlock requires two senior on-call approvals plus a mandatory short pause before that rung can run at all.
During a noisy burst of alerts one night the playbook climbs fast and reaches the breaker. How it works¶
- Pre-commit a danger threshold. A specific rung or condition is designated as the point at which the system stops by default rather than continuing — the stop is the pre-set behavior, not a judgment call made under pressure.
- Split the authority. The top rungs require a second key — a two-person rule or senior sign-off — so no single actor, and no automated process, can cross them alone.
- Force a pause and reassess. Before the gated rung runs, a mandatory checkpoint halts the climb long enough to re-examine the situation, buying time against momentum and misperception.
- Fail safe. When the situation is ambiguous, the default is to halt, not to climb.
