Shadowing Session¶
Method — instantiates Tacit Knowledge Elicitation
An observer watches an expert do real work in its natural setting — silently and without participating — to capture the timing, tool use, and embodied cues that no interview would surface.
Some tacit knowledge never reaches words at all — it lives in when an expert acts, how they hold a tool, what they glance at, the pause before a move. Shadowing Session captures it by putting an observer alongside the expert during real work and asking that observer to watch, not interrupt. Its defining stance is non-participant, in-situ observation: the shadow neither performs the task (unlike an apprentice) nor asks the expert to narrate (unlike a think-aloud), but records what actually happens in the environment where it happens — the tools, the timing, the interruptions handled, the informal workarounds, the physical and sensory adjustments that the expert makes without ever deciding to. It is the mechanism for seeing what an interview omits precisely because the expert doesn't know they're doing it.
Example¶
An observer shadows a master cheesemaker through a make. She isn't a trainee and isn't asking questions; she's watching. She notes the maker dip a hand into the vat and hold it there a beat longer than the recipe's clock would suggest — cutting the curd not at the timed mark but a full minute later, on the day's warmer milk. She sees him pause at the smell as the whey drains and adjust the stir without comment. She logs how he keeps one eye on a vat two stations over while working this one.
None of these moves are in the standard operating procedure, and if you asked him "how do you know when to cut?" he'd say "when it's ready" — a true and useless answer. The shadow captures the observable correlates of "ready": the finger test, the timing offset on warm days, the smell cue at drain. These become the raw material a later debrief can interpret — but the shadow's job was to see them at all, which no self-report would have delivered. What shadowing cannot supply is the meaning behind the moves; watching reveals that he waited, not why.
How it works¶
- Observe real work, not a demonstration. The value depends on the expert doing genuine work under genuine conditions; a staged demo loses the interruptions, improvisation, and embodied adjustment that carry the tacit content.
- Stay non-participant and low-footprint. The shadow neither performs nor interrogates during the session, minimizing the degree to which their presence changes the work being observed.
- Capture the un-narratable. Record timing, sequence, tool handling, gaze, physical adjustments, sensory checks, and workarounds — the register that words routinely skip.
- Pair with a later debrief. Observation surfaces what happened; the meaning is recovered afterward by asking the expert about the specific observed moments — shadowing sets up that interpretation but does not do it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Observer visibility — conspicuous note-taking versus unobtrusive presence or recording. Lower footprint reduces reactivity but limits what can be captured in the moment.
- Session duration and sampling — a single deep session or many short ones across conditions. Breadth catches how practice varies with context (the warm-milk day); depth catches the fine texture of one run.
- Capture richness — field notes, video, wearables, or sensor logs. Richer capture preserves embodied cues for later analysis but is more intrusive and heavier to review.
- Debrief coupling — debrief immediately after, batched later, or not at all. Tighter coupling recovers meaning while the observed moments are fresh; looser coupling is easier to schedule but loses detail.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is access to the embodied and situated layer that self-report cannot reach: the timing, the tool feel, the sensory checks, the environmental awareness an expert exercises without noticing. For craft, physical, and high-context work it sees what interviews are blind to.
Its central hazard is reactivity — people behave differently when watched, so the observed performance can be a cleaned-up or self-conscious version of real practice.[1] Observation is also dense and ambiguous: hours of watching yield behavior whose meaning is opaque without interpretation, and a shadow can easily over-read or misattribute a move they don't understand. And shadowing is inherently low-throughput and captures only what happens to occur during the session — a rare-but-critical judgment may simply never come up. The classic misuse is treating the observation as the knowledge, publishing "what the expert does" without ever recovering why. The discipline that keeps it honest is to keep the observer's footprint low, sample across conditions rather than one convenient session, and always pair the watching with a debrief so the observed moves get their meaning — observation is the setup, not the answer.
How it implements the components¶
Shadowing Session fills the components a silent observer in the real setting can produce:
expert_practice_observation— captures skilled action in its actual environment, with tools, timing, interruptions, and workarounds intact — the things an interview omits.sensory_or_embodied_cue_capture— records the perceptual and physical register (a finger test, a pause at a smell, a tool grip) that the expert performs without verbalizing.
It does not ask the expert to narrate (cue_elicitation in the moment — Think-Aloud Protocol), does not participate or elicit corrections (expert_novice_comparison, novice_readback — Apprenticeship Observation), and does not recover the reasoning behind the observed moves (decision_rationale_probe — Cognitive Interview / Expert Debrief).

Notes¶
Shadowing Session, Apprenticeship Observation, and Think-Aloud Protocol form a trio of observation methods separated by the observer's role: the shadow only watches (lowest footprint, captures natural behavior), the apprentice participates and is corrected (surfaces standards through attempts), and the think-aloud asks the expert to narrate (surfaces the concurrent inner stream). Choose by how much intrusion the work tolerates and whether you need behavior, standards, or narration.
