A designer extending the face to a new script does not read a policy; they lay their proposed stroke against the sheet, see it drift toward a bottom-band reject, and correct it before it ever ships.

How it works

The sheet is organized as a controlled comparison:

  • The primitive roster. Every base form, drawn once at canonical size and proportion, so there is a single authoritative depiction of each — no two teams working from different mental images.
  • The allowed-variant band. For each primitive, the sanctioned transformations shown as concrete instances (the permitted scales, mirrors, and rotations), so "allowed variant" is a picture, not a description.
  • The exclusion band. The disallowed near-forms displayed adjacent to their correct counterparts, each with a one-line reason. Showing the reject next to the right answer is what makes the boundary legible — the sheet teaches the edge by contrast.

Its whole value is co-location: approved, variant, and forbidden in one visual field, so conformance is checked by looking, not by cross-referencing prose.

Tuning parameters

  • Roster size — how many primitives the sheet admits. A smaller roster is more disciplined and memorable; a larger one covers more cases but weakens the "alphabet you can hold in your head" quality.
  • Variant explicitness — whether every allowed variant is drawn or only representative ones. Exhaustive variants remove ambiguity but crowd the sheet; representative ones stay readable but leave edges to judgment.
  • Exclusion coverage — how many near-miss rejects are shown. More rejects preempt more mistakes but can imply the boundary is fuzzier than it is; too few leave the tempting errors undocumented.
  • Annotation depth — how much each reject is explained. Terse labels keep the sheet scannable; fuller reasons teach the principle but turn the exhibit into a document.
  • Canonical fidelity — how exactly forms are drawn (precise measured geometry vs. indicative sketches). Measured fidelity makes the sheet a true reference; sketch fidelity is faster to produce but invites drift.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is instant, low-literacy conformance checking: anyone can compare a candidate form to the sheet and see whether it belongs, and the exclusion band actively teaches the boundary rather than merely asserting it — the same logic as a type specimen sheet, which shows a face's forms in situ so its character is judged by eye rather than by spec.[n1]

Its failure mode is that a sheet shows the forms but cannot show the language: two designers can both pick only approved primitives and still assemble them into incompatible compositions, because how forms may legally combine is not on the sheet. The classic misuse is treating the sheet as complete governance — "everything I used is on the approved sheet, therefore my artifact conforms" — when the artifact violates composition or spacing rules the sheet never claimed to cover. The sheet also silently rots: if it is not re-cut when the vocabulary is revised, it certifies forms that have since been retired. The guarding discipline is to scope the sheet honestly as a forms reference, pair it with the rulebook and grid that govern combination and placement, and re-issue it whenever the vocabulary changes.
