Signage and Wayfinding Revision¶
Environmental signage artifact — instantiates Latent Affordance Surfacing
Rewrites the signs, labels, and waypoints in a space so an existing-but-unnoticed route or capability reads clearly from the point where people actually stand and decide.
In a physical or navigational space, the affordance is a route, a service, a door, or an action — and the cue is a sign. Signage and Wayfinding Revision designs those signifiers and places them where the choice is actually made, so an available-but-invisible option becomes legible to a person moving through the environment. Its defining move pairs signifier design with placement at the decision point: the right words and symbol are only half the job; a perfect sign at the wrong location — past the fork, at the destination rather than the turn — is functionally invisible. Where software siblings surface capabilities on a screen, this one operates in built space, on the surfaces a person literally walks past, and it lives or dies on being seen while there is still a choice to make.
Example¶
A large airport offers a priority-security lane to eligible travelers, but almost no one uses it — the only sign sits at the lane itself, forty metres past the point where the queue splits and everyone has already committed to the main line. The capability exists; the cue arrives too late to act on. The revision moves and redesigns the signifier: a clear "Priority Security — this way," with a legible icon and the airport's consistent color system, placed upstream at the split where travelers still choose. Now the option is readable at the decision point, in the vocabulary the rest of the terminal already uses, so a traveler sees it while they can still turn toward it.
The route did not change and the eligibility did not change — only the environment's honesty about what is possible, delivered where standing travelers can still act.
How it works¶
- Find the decision points. Trace the path and mark where a person chooses — the fork, the turn, the moment before commitment — because a cue is only useful upstream of the choice it informs.
- Design the signifier for legibility. Give each sign clear wording, a recognizable symbol, adequate contrast, and membership in one consistent visual system, so the space reads as a coherent whole rather than a patchwork.
- Place upstream, not at the destination. Position the cue where the choice is still open, not where the option already ends; a sign at the destination confirms, it does not surface.
Its distinguishing trait is the marriage of cue design and spatial placement in the built environment — legibility from where people actually stand.
Tuning parameters¶
- Signifier wording and symbol — how the option is named and pictured. Plain, familiar terms surface it to newcomers; jargon or a novel icon re-hides it behind a decoding step.
- Visual salience — size, contrast, color. Loud enough to be seen from the decision point, not so loud it joins the wall of competing signs and lowers everyone's legibility.
- Placement relative to the decision — how far upstream the sign sits. Too late and the choice is already made; too early and it is forgotten before the fork.
- System consistency — one wayfinding vocabulary versus ad-hoc signs. A consistent system compounds legibility; inconsistent signs each demand fresh decoding.
- Sign density — how many cues share a surface. Each added sign competes for attention; past a threshold, one more sign lowers the salience of all of them.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is surfacing options in physical and navigational space where no software layer exists, and fixing the specific, common failure of a cue placed where it cannot be acted on. Done well, it makes an environment tell the truth about what is possible at the moment that truth can change a person's direction.[1]
Its central failure mode is sign clutter: adding one more sign to an already-noisy wall lowers the legibility of every sign there, so more signage can surface less. The classic misuse is the compliance sign — placed to satisfy a checklist, at the destination rather than the decision point, technically present and functionally invisible. The discipline that guards against this is to place at the decision point, prune competing signs rather than only adding, and test legibility from exactly where people stand.
How it implements the components¶
Signage and Wayfinding Revision realizes the cue-in-built-space side of the archetype — designing the signifier and placing it where the choice is made:
affordance_signifier_design— it authors the visual signifier: the wording, symbol, and styling that make an available route or service perceivable and interpretable to a passer-by.surface_placement_and_timing_rule— it positions that signifier at the upstream decision point, where the person can still act, rather than at the destination.
It does not measure whether travelers then find the route (First-Attempt Discovery Test); it does not carry the affordance into a non-visual modality — tactile, audible, programmatic — which is Assistive-Technology Labeling Pass; and it does not surface capability on a screen in response to a query (Search and Autocomplete Suggestion). This is the visual cue in the built environment.
