Signifier Prototyping¶
Design method — instantiates Affordance Shaping
Designs and iterates the perceivable cues that tell an agent an action is available and how to perform it — turning a hidden affordance into an obvious one for everyone who has to see it.
An affordance can be perfectly real and still go unused because nothing tells the agent it is there. Signifier Prototyping works on that gap: it designs and iterates the perceivable cues — shapes, labels, icons, contrasts, sounds, textures, motion — that advertise which action is available and how to take it. Its defining concern is the split, sharpened by Don Norman, between an affordance (a possible action) and a signifier (the perceivable signal of it): this mechanism owns the signal, not the action.[n1] And because a cue only works if it is perceived, its second commitment is that the signifier read across the whole intended audience — not just the designer, who already knows where everything is.
Example¶
A coffee chain adds "order ahead" to its app so regulars can skip the line, but almost nobody finds it — the affordance exists, the signifier doesn't. Signifier Prototyping is the loop that fixes it. The team mocks up several candidate cues for the same underlying action: a labelled button on the home screen, a persistent bottom-bar icon, a first-run coach-mark, a card that surfaces when you're near a store. Each is a cheap prototype, tested only for whether people notice it and read it correctly.
They quickly learn the icon alone is mistaken for "favorites," and the coach-mark is dismissed and forgotten. The labelled button plus a location-triggered card wins — but only once they check it against heterogeneity: the contrast is raised so it survives sunlight and low-vision users, and the meaning is carried by text and shape, not colour alone, so it still reads for a colour-blind user. The action never changed; the cue for it did, until it was obvious to everyone who had to see it.
How it works¶
- Separate the cue from the action. The affordance is held fixed; only the signifier is varied, so the test is strictly "is this action perceivable and legible?"
- Generate rival cues for one action. Several candidate signals — placement, form, wording, modality — are prototyped cheaply for the same underlying affordance.
- Test for noticing and reading, not liking. Cues are judged by whether target users spot them and infer the right action, not by aesthetic preference.
- Design for redundancy across perceivers. Meaning is carried through more than one channel (text and shape, not colour alone) so the cue survives the range of senses and contexts in the audience.
Tuning parameters¶
- Modality — visual, auditory, haptic, or several at once. More channels raise the odds of being perceived but add clutter and cost.
- Salience — how strongly the cue competes for attention. Louder cues get noticed but, overused, become noise the agent learns to ignore.
- Explicitness — from a subtle shape hint to a spelled-out label. Explicit cues teach fast but can feel patronizing or crowd the interface.
- Fidelity of the prototype — paper sketch, clickable mock, or near-final. Higher fidelity reads more truly but slows the iteration the method depends on.
- Redundancy — how many independent channels carry the same meaning. More redundancy widens accessibility at the price of simplicity.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it attacks the most common affordance failure — invisible rather than impossible — and it does so cheaply, before the expensive build, by iterating on the signal until people reliably see and understand it. Designing for heterogeneity in the same loop is what stops a cue that works for the designer from failing the user who is older, colour-blind, or in a hurry.
Its failure modes cluster around who does the judging. A designer who tests cues on colleagues confirms only that experts already primed for the feature can find it; and the reflex to add more signifiers turns a clear interface into flashing clutter where nothing stands out — a false fix that trades one perceivability problem for another. The classic misuse is prototyping to justify a cue the team already fell in love with, showing it to friendly viewers rather than a stranger who has never seen it. The discipline that guards against this is to test with first-time, representative users and to measure comprehension — did they take the right action — rather than preference.

Signifier Prototyping fills the perceivability side of the archetype — making the intended action visible and legible, for everyone:

It shapes only what is perceived. Whether the action is physically possible is Robot Action-Space Mapping or Task and Capability Analysis; making the right option the low-effort or do-nothing one is Friction Adjustment and Safe Default or Preselected Path; and directing an agent along a route is Wayfinding Marker, a signifier put to spatial use.
