Small-Signal Rehearsal¶
Rehearsal protocol — instantiates Subcritical Priming for Faster Threshold Crossing
Runs low-commitment partial practice — perturbations too small to trip the transition — that build and refresh coordinated readiness while revealing how ready the system truly is.
Small-Signal Rehearsal primes a crossing by exercising the doing of it in miniature: partial, low-commitment practice runs, deliberately kept too small to trip the real transition, that build coordination among the actors and — by how well they go — reveal how ready the system actually is. Its defining idea is that it acts rather than merely watches, and that each run pays twice: it raises readiness and refreshes it, because rehearsed coordination decays without repetition and every rehearsal tops it back up. The quality of the run is the readiness signal; the cadence of runs is the decay monitor. The name is borrowed from control engineering, where a "small signal" is a probe too small to move a system off its operating point[n1] — exactly a rehearsal that stresses the crossing without ever committing to it.
Example¶
A Broadway company cannot jump cold to a polished opening night — a first full public performance with no practice would be chaos: missed light cues, dead scene transitions, actors out of sync. So the production runs small-signal rehearsals. First come technical rehearsals that run the lighting and sound cues without full performance intensity; then a run of discounted preview performances, played to real but low-stakes audiences with critics still embargoed and changes still being made nightly. Each preview is a partial, sub-threshold run: it builds the company's coordination, it surfaces exactly where the show still stumbles, and its cadence keeps timing sharp so skills don't decay before the real event. None of them is the opening — they are perturbations small enough to stay below the threshold the official opening will finally cross. When opening night's trigger arrives, the primed company crosses fast and coherently, because it has already done the crossing in miniature, many times.
How it works¶
- Define a sub-threshold run. Construct a partial exercise that stresses the coordination the crossing needs without being consequential enough to trigger it.
- Run it repeatedly. Repetition is the point: each pass builds transferable coordination among the actors.
- Read the run as signal. Treat the quality of each run — what held, what broke — as the leading indicator of readiness, fed back into the next pass.
- Let cadence fight decay. Declining run quality between rehearsals is the decay reading, and the next rehearsal is the correction. The distinguishing move is that the mechanism generates its own readiness signal by acting, rather than instrumenting the system from outside.
Tuning parameters¶
- Fidelity — how close each run is to the real crossing; higher fidelity builds more transferable readiness but risks a "rehearsal" that accidentally becomes the real thing.
- Cadence — how often runs happen; frequent runs beat back decay but cost time and energy and can burn people out.
- Scope per run — full run-through versus isolated segment drills; segments are cheaper but miss the integration that only a whole pass reveals.
- Scenario variety — rehearsing one script versus several; variety guards against overfitting but dilutes practice on the most likely case.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it builds genuine coordinated capacity and, in the same act, surfaces true readiness rather than wishful thinking — and its cadence naturally counters the decay that quietly erodes preparation between rehearsal and trigger.
Its failure mode is rehearsal theater: going through the motions performs readiness without building it, so the signal flatters and the crossing then fails for real. A second failure is overfitting — drilling one scripted scenario so thoroughly that a differently-shaped real trigger finds the team unprepared. The classic misuse is a drill or tabletop exercise[n2] run as a box-ticking ceremony that certifies readiness without ever testing it. The guarding discipline is to grade each run against honest criteria and vary the scenario adversarially, and to keep fidelity high enough to transfer but bounded, so a rehearsal never slips into becoming the crossing itself.
How it implements the components¶
priming_input_inventory— the practice runs are the priming inputs it injects; it maintains the menu of drills, tech runs, and previews available.readiness_signal_and_feedback_loop— each run's quality is the leading readiness signal, fed back to shape the next pass.priming_decay_monitor— the cadence doubles as a decay monitor: a stumbling run between rehearsals flags fading readiness, and re-running restores it.
It does not define or watch the crossing boundary from the outside (threshold_model_and_crossing_criterion) — that is Threshold Proximity Monitoring, its nearest twin, which observes without intervening while this one acts — and it does not shape interpretation or carry the ethical_consent_boundary of cueing an audience (that is Associative Cue Preloading).

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Experiment, Test & Rehearsal
Rationale: Small-Signal Rehearsal operates as an active test, trial, simulation, drill, or rehearsal that generates evidence through a deliberate attempt or perturbation because it runs low-commitment partial practice — perturbations too small to trip the transition — that build and refresh coordinated readiness while revealing how ready the system truly is.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Small-Signal Rehearsal as 'Runs low-commitment partial practice — perturbations too small to trip the transition — that build and refresh coordinated readiness while revealing how ready the system truly is', so its operative form is Experiment, Test & Rehearsal.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Systems Thinking & Cybernetics
Origin pattern: Convergent development
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Subthreshold perturbations that exercise coordinated response without crossing the transition are systems-control probes combined with rehearsal. Army progressive-training doctrine supports graduated exposure; engineering supplies safe bounds.

Notes¶
[n1] In electronics and control theory, small-signal analysis probes a system with perturbations small enough that its operating point does not shift, so you can measure its response without changing its state. The name captures a rehearsal's essential constraint: exercise the crossing, but stay too small to cause it. ↩
[n2] A tabletop exercise is a discussion- or walk-through-based drill of a plan, common in emergency and security preparedness. Done adversarially it builds and tests readiness; done ceremonially it becomes the "rehearsal theater" this mechanism must avoid. ↩
