Spaced Integration Review¶
Review schedule — instantiates Post-Encoding Trace Stabilization
Revisits new material at expanding intervals to bind it into existing schema and strengthen its retrieval route over time.
A single encounter drops a fresh trace into memory unconnected; left there, it fades. Spaced Integration Review revisits new material on a schedule of expanding intervals, and each revisit does two things: it weaves the material more tightly into the learner's existing schema, and it strengthens the route back to it. Its defining move is the combination of spacing with integration — the reviews are not there to test whether the trace survived but to keep knitting it into what is already known, each pass at a longer gap. The trace stays internal, and the schedule's job is to deepen its connections and its accessibility, not to externalize or interrogate it.
Example¶
A graduate student encounters a new theoretical framework in her field — a way of modeling how institutions change. On first reading it makes sense in isolation but connects to nothing; a week later she can barely reconstruct it. Rather than reread it once and move on, she puts it on a spaced integration review schedule: revisit tomorrow, then in three days, then a week, then a month.
But each revisit is deliberately integrative, not a re-read. On the second pass she maps the framework onto two studies she already knows well. On the third she contrasts it with a rival theory and finds where they disagree. On the fourth she uses it to explain a case from her own data. By the month-out review, the framework is no longer a free-floating summary — it is bound into a web of studies, contrasts, and applications she can reach from many directions, and calling it up has become easy. The expanding gaps let each layer of connection settle before the next is added, and the route to the idea gets more traveled every time.
How it works¶
- Revisit at expanding intervals. Reviews start close together and stretch out, so each pass lands as the trace is beginning to fade but before it is lost.
- Integrate, don't just re-read. Every revisit adds a connection — mapping to prior knowledge, contrasting with rivals, applying to a case — so the trace is bound more richly into existing schema each time.
- Strengthen the access route. Reaching the material from new angles reinforces multiple retrieval paths, making it accessible from more cues.
- Keep it internal. The material stays in the mind and its network; the schedule deepens and connects rather than offloading the knowledge to an external artifact.
Tuning parameters¶
- Interval expansion rate — how fast the gaps grow. Aggressive expansion is efficient but risks reviewing after the trace has already faded; gentle expansion is safe but slow.
- Integration depth per pass — how much new connection each revisit adds. Deeper integration builds richer structure but makes each review costlier.
- Connection breadth — how many different prior anchors the material is tied to. Broad binding aids flexible access but risks forcing shallow or false links.
- Number of passes — how many reviews before the material is left alone. More passes deepen integration but hit diminishing returns and compete for time.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it turns isolated new material into connected, flexibly-accessible knowledge — the essence of assimilation and accommodation, Piaget's account of how new information is both absorbed into existing schemas and reshapes them.[n1] Spacing the integrative passes lets each layer of connection stabilize before the next, so the structure that results is durable rather than crammed.
Its failure mode is confusing integration with mere re-exposure: passively rereading at intervals feels productive but adds no new connection, so the material stays isolated even as the calendar fills. The classic misuse is spacing without integrating — treating the schedule as attendance rather than as an occasion to build links. The guarding discipline is to require each review to do something new (a mapping, a contrast, an application), and to notice that spaced integration deepens and connects a trace but does not by itself prove durability — that verdict belongs to a delayed test, not to the review count.
How it implements the components¶
integration_context_map— binding the material to prior knowledge, rivals, and cases on each pass is exactly this context map, built up over successive reviews.access_path_reinforcement_marker— reaching the trace from new angles at each interval strengthens its retrieval routes, marking and reinforcing the access path distinct from the trace's content.
It does not push the material into a standing external artifact that carries the behavior — that external_scaffold_until_stable is Lesson-to-Routine Hardening's move; spaced integration review keeps the trace internal and reinforces recall of it, whereas lesson-to-routine offloads it into an external routine, and unlike Delayed Retention Probe it reinforces rather than tests.
