Standardization method — instantiates Resource Liquefaction
Repackages heterogeneous goods into a standard denomination, container, or grade — a common physical unit any handler can stack, count, and route — so bespoke stock becomes movable through shared logistics, at the cost of the local fit the odd sizes carried.
Standard Packaging liquefies physical goods by giving them a common unit of handling. Its distinctive idea — the one that separates it from a data format or a financial instrument — is that it standardizes the material form and its movement: it wraps, denominates, or grades heterogeneous items into a uniform physical package that any handler in a shared logistics network can accept, stack, count, price, and route without knowing or caring what is inside. A resource that is stranded because it comes in bespoke shapes, sizes, or grades becomes mobile the moment it is expressed in a unit the whole transfer chain already recognizes. The package is not the goods; it is the standardized envelope that lets the goods travel.
Example¶
Before the shipping container, ocean cargo moved as breakbulk: barrels, sacks, crates, and machinery, each hand-loaded piece by piece, slow to transfer between ship and rail and truck, and exposed to damage and pilferage at every touch. Malcom McLean's insight was to standardize not the cargo but its container — a steel box of fixed dimensions and corner fittings that a crane could lift, a ship could stack, and a truck chassis or rail car could carry unchanged.[n1] A pallet of shoes and a crate of machine parts became, for the purposes of the transfer network, the same unit: one intermodal container. Any port with the standard cranes and any carrier with the standard chassis could handle either without repacking.
The trapped value here was reachability, not existence — the goods were always there, but moving them was so costly that much stayed put. Standardizing the handling unit collapsed that cost. The trade-off is equally concrete: a half-full container still ships as a full unit, and cargo that doesn't fit the box's shape pays a penalty or is excluded — the local-fit loss the standard exacts.
How it works¶
- Define the standard unit. Fix the dimensions, denomination, or grade — the container size, the case pack, the quality tier — that the transfer network will accept.
- Repackage or grade into it. Incoming heterogeneous goods are consolidated, denominated, or classified into the standard unit, becoming fungible for handling even if their contents differ.
- Route on the shared network. Because every handler recognizes the unit, the packaged goods move through common infrastructure with standardized custody handoffs and no bespoke re-handling.
- Book the loss. Fill inefficiency, packaging overhead, and the exclusion of odd sizes are tracked as the price paid for mobility.
Tuning parameters¶
- Unit granularity — large containers versus small case packs. Larger units cut per-unit handling but strand value in partial fills; smaller units flex to demand but multiply handling.
- Grade tolerance — how wide a range of goods qualifies for one standard grade. Loose tolerance admits more stock into the standard unit but risks unsafe or misleading substitution; tight tolerance is faithful but excludes more.
- Consolidation policy — whether partial units wait to be filled or ship half-empty. Waiting improves fill efficiency but adds delay; shipping partial preserves speed at the cost of wasted capacity.
- Standardization scope — a universal unit versus a niche one. A universal unit maximizes network reach; a niche unit fits its goods better but forfeits the shared infrastructure.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it collapses one-off handling into shared logistics: bespoke stock that could only move through custom arrangements becomes routable through infrastructure built once and used by everyone, and mobility rises sharply for anything that fits the unit.
Its failure mode is over-standardization — the common unit erases variety that mattered. Goods that don't fit the standard grade are excluded or forced into a tier that misrepresents them; empty space in half-full units is pure waste; and a package that hides quality differences invites unsafe "close enough" substitution. Its classic misuse is standardizing for administrative neatness rather than real reuse — imposing a unit that adds packaging cost without actually widening where the goods can go. The discipline that guards against this is to keep the conversion-loss model explicit: name what fit, variety, or precision the standard erased, and confirm the mobility gained is worth it rather than assuming the unit is free.
How it implements the components¶
Standard Packaging realizes the unitize-and-move slice of the archetype — how a physical resource is given a transferable form, and nothing about its semantics or price:

It does not translate informational semantics or validate schema conformance (conversion_rule, compatibility_validation) — that is Interoperable Data Format, its nearest twin, which standardizes meaning rather than a material unit of handling. Nor does it run the venue where packaged goods are matched to buyers (exchange_interface; Resource Marketplace).
