Stop-Point Preference Model¶
Model — instantiates Escalation-Ladder Advantage Governance
Models where the other party would rather stop, settle, or comply than climb further — its pain thresholds, its best alternative, and its need to save face — so the ladder can be aimed to land it there.
Stop-Point Preference Model reasons from the counterparty's payoffs to predict where, on the ladder, it would prefer to stop rather than climb another rung. Its defining move is that it takes the other side's point of view, not yours: it asks where continuing costs them more than settling, what their best alternative to settling is, and what would let them stop without losing face. Where the credibility audit asks whether they believe our threats and the advantage matrix asks who is stronger, this model asks the question the whole governed ladder exists to answer — where will they get off? — because a ladder that produces resolution has to be aimed at a real stop point, not just built tall.
Example¶
A company in a patent dispute stops rehearsing its own case strength and instead models the plaintiff's stop point. The plaintiff is a small firm; its litigation burn runs to roughly a few hundred thousand a quarter; its best alternative to a trial is a licensing arrangement; and its principal has said publicly that this is about respect, not just money — so face is in the payoff. The model predicts the plaintiff will settle once sustained legal costs bite and the settlement can be dressed as a licensing agreement between peers — but that it will refuse a bare cash offer that reads as capitulation.
So the company shapes its escalation to reach exactly that point: enough procedural pressure to make the costs real, paired with an off-ramp framed as a license rather than a surrender. The dispute settles roughly where the model predicted — cost pressure plus a face-saving frame — and not at the higher rung the company would have climbed to had it modeled only its own resolve.
How it works¶
- Build their payoff curve up the ladder. For each rung, estimate where the counterparty's cost of continuing exceeds its cost of stopping — that crossover is the candidate stop point.
- Estimate their walk-away. Their best alternative to any settlement sets the floor below which they will not stop; misjudging it is how confrontations overshoot.
- Include the non-material terms. Face, audience costs, and internal politics often move the stop point more than money, so the model prices them in rather than assuming a purely economic actor.
- Output a rung and its conditions. It reports not just a predicted stop rung but the pressure-plus-exit combination that would trigger it — feeding both the escalation design and the off-ramp.
Tuning parameters¶
- Rationality assumption — model them as a rational maximizer, a boundedly-rational actor, or a coalition with warring factions. The third is what catches "their negotiator wants to settle but their board won't let him."
- Payoff visibility — how much of their real costs and alternatives you assume you can see. Overconfidence here is the model's primary failure.
- Face weighting — how heavily audience and reputational costs count against material ones.
- Audience depth — whether you model their internal or domestic audience separately, because they may need to be seen to stop, not merely to stop.
- Update rule — how fast you revise the modeled stop point as their moves reveal new information.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it turns "how do we win?" into "where do they stop, and what lands them there?" — the question a governed ladder actually needs answered — and it forces escalation pressure to be paired with a matching exit rather than applied blind. The walk-away term is essentially the counterparty's BATNA: its best alternative to a negotiated agreement[1] sets the floor on any stop point, and mistaking that floor is a common way escalations run past the settlement that was available.
It misleads when you model them from your own frame — mirror-imaging their preferences onto yours — or when their true payoffs simply aren't visible, or when internal factions make "their" stop point a moving, contested target. Its classic misuse is assuming they will stop where you would, or where it is convenient for your plan — a projection wearing the costume of analysis. The discipline is to source the model from their behavior and their audiences rather than your assumptions, hold it as a hypothesis you revise on every move, and stress-test it before betting the confrontation on it.
How it implements the components¶
counterparty_stop_point_model— its sole output: the predicted rung at which the other party prefers to stop, together with the pressure-and-exit conditions that would land it there.
It does not build the exit itself (the Off-Ramp Offer Protocol), audit whether our own threats are believed (the Rung Credibility Audit), or carry the signal to the other side (the De-escalation Hotline or Channel); it predicts where they will get off and hands the "how to let them" to those siblings.

Revealed reluctance, leaked red lines, and public ultimatums are often performed for effect, so the model should distinguish a genuine stop preference from a signaled one — and treat a suspiciously convenient stop point as a prompt to look harder, not as a gift.
