Stratigraphic Record¶
Method — instantiates Layered Record Accumulation
Uses physical or conceptual strata to infer the sequence and conditions by which a cumulative structure formed.
A Stratigraphic Record is a method for reading a cumulative structure whose history nobody wrote down. Its defining idea is that sequence and origin are reconstructed after the fact from the physical relationships between layers — which layer lies above which, where one deposit cuts into another — rather than recorded by an author at the moment of deposition. No actor signs a stratum; the analyst infers the order from superposition and the origin from the layer's composition, and — crucially — grades how trustworthy that inference is, because burrows, pits, and erosion can scramble the sequence. What makes it THIS mechanism is that the record is latent in the material and must be interpreted out, not looked up.
Example¶
Excavating a Near-Eastern settlement mound, archaeologists work down through the deposits. They define contexts — distinct layers — wherever soil colour, texture, or inclusions change: an ash lens, a mud-brick collapse, a plaster floor. Each contact between contexts is a boundary. Applying the law of superposition[1], they order the contexts into a Harris matrix, so the plaster floor is known to predate the ash lens above it. They infer each layer's origin from its makeup: the ash lens as a destruction-by-fire event, the floor as an occupation surface, a sterile silt band as a flood. Where a later rubbish pit or a rodent burrow cuts through several layers, that intrusion is flagged as disturbing the sequence, lowering confidence in the local order.
Setup to outcome: the team establishes that a defensive wall postdates a domestic hearth, because the wall's foundation trench was cut through the hearth's ash and backfilled. That single relationship — wall-cut-through-hearth — fixes a sequence no scribe ever recorded, reconstructed purely from how the layers physically relate.
How it works¶
- Segment by material change. Wherever composition, colour, or texture shifts, a boundary marks the end of one stratum and the start of the next.
- Order by superposition. Absent disturbance, deeper layers formed earlier; contacts, cuts, and fills yield a relative sequence — an order without clock times.
- Infer origin from composition. A layer's makeup implies its depositional source and conditions: fire, flood, occupation, collapse, abandonment.
- Grade by disturbance. Intrusions, mixing, and erosional gaps that scramble the strata are flagged, so the confidence in the inferred order tracks how pristine the sequence is.
Tuning parameters¶
- Boundary sensitivity — how subtle a material change counts as a new layer. Fine sensitivity resolves brief events but multiplies contexts and interpretive load.
- Sequence resolution — relative ordering only, or calibration against absolute dating. Absolute anchors pin the timeline but cost lab work and are not always available.
- Provenance specificity — naming a broad origin (a burn) versus a precise mechanism (a single roof fire). Deeper inference is more informative but more speculative.
- Disturbance tolerance — how much intrusion or mixing is accepted before a layer's order is treated as unreliable. Strict rules protect the sequence but discard partly-scrambled evidence.
- Sampling density — how finely the structure is dissected. Denser sampling captures more of the formation history but is slower and more destructive.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is recovering an unrecorded history from the structure itself: where no one kept a log, the layers are the log, and their physical relationships yield a defensible sequence and set of formation conditions. It is the only record available when the makers left no account.
Its failure mode is over-reading disturbed strata: treating a scrambled or truncated sequence as clean, so an inferred order is asserted with more confidence than the material supports — an intrusion missed, an erosional gap read as continuous deposition. The classic misuse is inverting the reasoning: assuming a sequence and then interpreting ambiguous layers to fit it, rather than letting the physical relationships constrain the story. The discipline that guards against this is to record boundaries and disturbances before drawing conclusions and to let confidence fall wherever the strata are demonstrably mixed.

It does NOT record an authorship_or_actor_marker — a natural stratum has no author who signs it, unlike Commit History; nor does it apply status flags via interpretation_rule to distinguish current from superseded, as Incident Timeline does for a live event.

Every other mechanism here records history as it is made; a stratigraphic record reconstructs it afterward from physical residue. That inversion is why it uniquely carries an explicit confidence marker on its own sequence: the order is a claim about the past, not a logged fact, and its reliability depends entirely on how undisturbed the material remains.
