The validation mechanisms in this archetype produce evidence; Supplier or Model Homologation is the one that decides on it. Its defining move is converting "an engineer thinks the alternate is fine" into a sanctioned, recorded decision: a named approved substitute, the conditions and limits of its use, the evidence relied on, an owner who is answerable for it, and a trigger that forces re-approval when the role or the substitute changes. It is the governance capstone — the mechanism that turns conformance evidence into permission.

Example

A carmaker relies on a single supplier for a safety-critical brake caliper and wants a second source to reduce that risk. The alternate cannot simply be dropped into production; it must be homologated. The candidate part is tested against the role's requirements — dimensional tolerances, material spec, fatigue life, braking performance — under specified operating conditions, and the results are examined against the equivalence requirements fixed in advance.

The approval is then issued as a formal record: this part, from this supplier, is approved for this vehicle platform within this temperature and load envelope, on this evidence, owned by this engineering authority. Until that record exists, the alternate may not go into a car. And if the caliper's design specification later changes, a re-homologation trigger fires — the old approval does not silently carry over to a part that is no longer the one that was tested. How it works

  • Fix the equivalence requirements. Define what the substitute must prove, and the operating envelope the approval will cover, before a candidate is named.
  • Assemble and examine evidence. Gather conformance and capability evidence (from tests, trials, and comparison) and judge it against those requirements.
  • Decide at the gate. Approve, conditionally approve, or reject; an unapproved substitute cannot enter the role.

Tuning parameters

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its failure modes are the ones any certification is prone to. It approves under specified — often lab — conditions that may not match the field, so an approval can be technically valid and practically wrong. And it is the archetype's clearest candidate to be run backwards: homologating a supplier already chosen on price, assembling the evidence to justify the pick rather than to test it — approval as ceremony. Homologation is a decision, not a test, so its assurance is only ever as good as the evidence it consumes and the honesty of the conditions it records.
